What does the contract say about cancelling?

If you signed up to a 12 month contract, 10 months ago then just make the last two payments then cancel. If you are only just into a 12 month contract then it may cost more to get out of it, so you need to ask for some goodwill and hope they will allow you to cancel.

Well its your choice not to go, and the gym is open. So yes, of course they can.
That is just an assumption on your part and not helpful at all.

Dear OP, phone and ask and clearly state your concerns and why you are not going there.  IMO, they may make a full or at least part credit. It never hurts to ask.
What assumption? Have you actually read the opening post? The OP is choosing, by their own admission, not to go to a gym they are paying for. Yes by all means they can ring the gym and lay it on thick but the gym are under no obligation whatsoever to do anything. Shielding in England has finished (assuming thats where the OP is) and the OP isnt even the one with the medical issues.

Please dont make this thread vanish, you have done a good job doing that today.
I cant believe Sweetsand reported this post 🙄
    That actually got reported?
Madness. Seems people would rather have sugar coated niceness with no truth than actual facts

What does your gyms website say about freezing membership? Most gyms are allowing  members to freeze their membership without charge. I have just frozen mine for a couple of months. I actually visited the gym twice before my freeze kicked in and was impressed how well done it was. You have to book in advance, I went to the last slot of the day and their were 10 of us in the whole gym. I am in similar situation to yourself and once this freeze is over I will be going back.

I had a gym membership that got temporarily stopped when gyms were closed.. they now want to reinstate the payments which is fair enough if the gym is going to be used. My problem is I have a very vulnerable daughter who is terrified of catching this horrible disease, she hasnt crossed the doors for 17 weeks now and we have done everything we can to shield her down to shopping 30 mins before the shop closes so we dont come into contact with anyone. There is no way I will be going back to the gym in a room with loads of strangers so will not be using my membership... once all this is over I will have no problem going back to the gym. Can they make me pay under these circumstances? Thank you

Many gyms allow members to freeze their membership for a wide range of reasons. Some may have a token fee for doing so. Search for 'freeze' in your terms and conditions.
