Hi
I have a bunch of gold jewellery that I need to initially value and then sell for a cash sum. It's the first time I'm doing this.
When selecting a reputable valuation company what key criteria must they satisfy to ensure that they are legit and do a proper job? Based on my little knowledge on this area for me if they don't buy jewellery themselves (as well as value) then protects against conflict of interest and if they are members of Gemmological Association of Great Britain then provides some reassurance. I'm not sure what the regulatory body is for this work but goal is to get a fair valuation rather than get ripped off going to the local jewellers.
I am also thinking to get a couple of independent valuations to ensure I'm getting a fair price.
Finally once I have a valuation, I plan to find a group of local jewellers and ask them to match the valuation to buy for cash.
Thanks

Should be a jeweller near you. Gold is often priced on weight. Jewellery contains very little. Little interest in consumer items if you are expecting to recoup what you paid originally.

The jewellery looks almost entirely gold to the eye. In terms of purity it is 18-24 karat so my expectation is it will be worth a fair amount.

We have sold quite a few pieces over the years and we recommend https://www.hattongardenmetals.com/
Good prices fast payment no problems.
Bear in mind you will be selling as scrap.

Reminds me of facebook post from someone I went school with

She posted a smiley happy face telling the story of how she had been told her and her future husbands gold bands unfortunately were delayed and wouldn't be available in time for her wedding .... She was however overjoyed to accept a free upgrade to platinum instead

I came very close to replying that she should Google the respective prices ... But hey she was happy and I don't know her that well

Left is never right but I always am.

For a bunch of gold jewellery you are looking at scrap prices. Plated or 9k pieces will be worth less than 18k pieces
    These are reputable vendors
You should manage your expectations as regards the value of the gemstones

Any gemstones set in your gold jewellery ?
You did specifically mention gold, but if you are also talking about precious gems, you would get very different answers to the posts on this thread so far ( all of which I agree with BTW, unless precious stones are also involved).

I used a local independent jewellers to value all of my Mums jewellery for probate.
It cost £125 to find out it was worth £175.

No round brilliant diamonds then. Sorry about your jeweller's findings.

There are two prices for jewellery,  a price you buy at and a price you sell at   and the difference can be considerable.   You will usually get only scrap value if you sell

You should get a better price for quality antique items but even then  you may still be offered only scrap value.    It may perhaps be advisable to do some research first.     In the gold boom of early 1980,  when people were queuing to sell items of precious metal, it was I believe common for fine pieces of Georgian silver to be bought as scrap.
