Hellmann's Mayonnaise - do the glass jars normally have a plastic seal around the lid?

I buy Hellman's all the time and I have never had a plastic seal around the lid.
Just as well as it would just be a waste of plastic and there would be no need for it.

Are these the glass jars with the metal lids?

I opened a new jar yesterday and it did have the plastic seal, but it had been in the cupboard for a couple of months (stocked up when it was on offer).  Perhaps they have removed the seals in the last few weeks to reduce plastic, as you say?  I'm noticing lots of small changes like that (e.g. yogurts and cream now seem to be sold without the plastic over-lid).

Yes I have noticed the removal of the plastic lids from the 500g Greek yogurt pots in most of the supermarkets.

I've only ever seen the plastic on the plastic squeezy bottles of mayonnaise. I've never seen plastic on the jam jar type ones.

There is usually a clear plastic seal over the top of the glass jar of mayo. I haven't noticed it missing, but I haven't opened a new jar for a month or so.

If the middle of the top is depressed, you're fine. When you open the jar it should make that reassuring "pop", which it doesn't subsequently. If it doesn't, discard the item.
Check the popup button while you are still in the shop not while you are at home.

I bought this jar of Hellman’s mayonnaise in Tesco this morning - it has a plastic seal but not a ’pop up’ type lid, Just a flat one.
All the jars on the shelf, lighter and ‘normal’ varieties, were the same (I remembered this thread and checked).
Maybe it’s a recent change and this jar is the old type 🤷🏻‍♀️ (this one is BBE July 21)

Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

I used to buy Hellmann's organic mayonnaise from Ocado. I think that had a plastic seal.
  • I bought a jar from Ocado last week and noticed that there wasn't a plastic seal around the lid. I thought that the seal was missing as my previous jars aways had a seal so I contacted Ocado and they refunded me. I then ordered another jar, and again, the seal was absent. So I contacted Hellmann's, they said they are trialling having no seals on their jars (but the seal remains on plastic squeezy bottles). I expressed my concern that the lid itself is not tamper evident without the seal (it doesn't have the safety popper button on the lid).
