Hellmann's Mayonnaise - do the glass jars normally have a plastic seal around the lid?

I've not bought Hellmann's mayo for well over a year but recently had a hankering for some and bought a couple of 400g jars as part of my weekly Sainsburys shop.
However, neither jar has a plastic seal around the lid. I was sure that they used to have a plastic seal. Has this been discontinued as part of a cost cutting exercise or is this a mistake (or perhaps somebody has removed the seals)?

  • Does nobody here eat Hellmann's mayo then? I thought I'd have had a flood of replies. :)

It's too expensive these days. Others are just as good.
  • I haven't bought it for so long that I can't remember how much it used to be, never compared it to any others either.

If it's a metal "jam jar" type lid to a glass jar I wouldn't have though a further seal would be required.

Yes, I think they have had - not bought one for a few months though

Precisely. I neglected to also mention that I had another jar that was purchased a week or two ago from the same supermarket (forgot about that one) and no seal on that either.

I'm wondering if the the seal is perhaps no longer part of the manufacturing process due to some kind of environmental drive from Hellmann's (Unilever) to reduce plastic waste. After all, in America they are making their plastic containers out of recycled plastic now.

The important thing is to press the lid and ensure the airtight seal is intact.

If the middle of the top is depressed, you're fine. When you open the jar it should make that reassuring "pop", which it doesn't subsequently. If it doesn't, discard the item.

I buy Hellman's all the time and I have never had a plastic seal around the lid.
Just as well as it would just be a waste of plastic and there would be no need for it.
