You can get the classic menu on Windows 10 if you really want to stay in the old world.

Took your advice and tried to upgrade to windows 10. Unfortunately need the Windows product key.As the laptop came with Windows installed there's no separate software, and with V8/8.1 they stopped putting the key on a label on the laptop. So tried following the online advice to locate the key imbedded in the hard drive. Tried both 'cmd' and 'powershell' and entering "wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey " but get 'error invalid query'.Anyone got any suggestion?

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.techrepublic.com/article/3-simple-ways-to-find-your-windows-10-product-key/amp/
did you open an ADMIN cmd prompt?
As an aside, if you are upgrading from W8 to W10 you shouldn't need to enter the product key as it is already in W8.
If it is asking for it that suggests there is something wrong with the activation of your W8 system.
Anyway try running your cmd in an elevated command prompt0
