One solution could be for you to say, take what you want, leave what you don't and we will clear the rest of the house.

OK you have the hassle and possible expense of getting stuff taken away or hiring a skip, but it might be an option if you really must speed things up?

Oh deary me!!! Theres no such thing as unofficially exchanged!! 🤦‍♀️ You should not book removals, furniture etc until you have a definate date for completion upon exchange of contracts. If you exchange & complete on the same day, you naturally run the risk of the completion date changing (for any reason under the sun). You dont have a leg to stand on I'm afraid.

what im asking more is, how can we negotiate this? Feels unfair they’ve had 6 weeks to clear this house and now decide as completion is around the corner they will start now and take a month?

(a) accept it
(b) ask for a date somewhere in between
(c) deliver ultimatum for exchange by x date with completion on y date

Executors do have their own lives to lead. Perhaps they underestimated the time to complete the task and book clearance companies etc. Charity organisations are unlikely to be undertaking much at the current time.

OP how did it all pan out?  Did you manage to agree a completion date?  Was there a reason someone in the chain wanted exchange and completion on the same day?  Let us know when you're moved in and all the stress is behind you (hopefully).

Compromise was made to complete 14th instead. With exchange being done on Tuesday just gone to give security. Furniture company happy to delay and so was storage / removal company without any costs... It’s just meant we’ve lived out of boxes for an extra week.  T-minus 6 days!

In the end we pushed, the sellers of the house we’re buying pushed and it was both our solicitors were keen on simultaneous E&C due to uncertainties around us in the economy.
