if I were in your shoes I’d be much more worried about the GP’s answers than the £50 fee
I'm not actually "worried" at all as I've done everything correctly and it's only money when all said and done and I've got enough of that to see me through until I leave this world. I initially asked whether it was right that an insurer could make you pay for a certificate that they want? Had this been asked for at the point of taking out the insurance I could have taken the extra cost into consideration and taken my business elsewhere. I will send them the bill anyway, see what happens. I'll let you know how I get on.
Incidentally, I got back into the UK on May 11th. Its now August 2nd with no sign of this being sorted within the next month. The insurers have already paid me £100 compensation for keeping me waiting longer than I should have after I complained, it should have been dealt with within 30 days (their guidelines). I'll maybe take the £50 out of that.

I wonder if this hinges on whether there was a way of getting back with only short haul flights without waiting 6 weeks? Could the insurer be looking at this?I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Maybe. My travel agent certainly couldn't find a routing.

So how did you get home? Wait until Maldives opened up to flights?
I would guess the problem is that from an insurers point of view, waiting a day or two until flights open up to complete the journey via short haul is more cost effective than a first class short notice full price single fare. Once that day or two becomes 6 weeks, the financial situation reverses, particularly if they are on the hook for accommodation and incidental expenses. Even if not liable to pay for anything other than flights, if they could book you a ticket a week or two out that would have been cheaper than paying out for a ticket within 24/ 48 hours. So had their not been a pandemic and you could have spoken to them, they may well have made a different decision.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Are you aware that all your medical records are available on line free of charge ?Deleted_User said:Hi, I'm claiming on my travel insurance for a holiday curtailment. When I purchased the insurance last year I declared a medical condition. In fact, I had to pay extra for the insurance because of the condition. Now the company want me to prove that I suffer with this condition. Easy enough, my doctor will confirm it but there is a £50 charge for the medical certificate which the insurance company insist I am liable for. Does that sound right?
GP surgeries are in no hurry to tell you this.
I would try this first and see if your insurers will accept this

Went against specialist advice and flew direct on a flight over 13 hours. If I had have had a recurrence of DVT then I'm fairly confident my insurer would have washed their hands of me for going against medical advice. That's basically what happened last time. The insurer (same one) wanted me to fly home first class but I had my wife with me, they wouldn't get her a ticket so it would have meant her being on her own in economy for two 12 hour+ flights. I told them in that case I'd have to fly economy with her and they said if I did I would no longer be covered for the flight home or any further illness. I think the fact they did that last time might come in quite handy should this become a case, which in all honesty I dont think it will, I'll just have to lump the £50 charge.silvercar said:So how did you get home? I hope that you flew home economy but still waited 6 weeks to do so, doesn't weaken your case.Deleted_User said:

Just thought I'd come back and update this. Have spoken to my insurers today and they have agreed the claim in full. I will have to meet the cost for my doctors medical certificate, however I hadn't claimed the cost of seeing the specialist in Singapore (twice) and they have told me I can claim that which more than covers the £50 I paid my GP. Had to wait over 6 months to sort this out but am very content with the result. Happy bunny.
