Buyong a new numberplate
Options
Hi all
Anyone recently changed their numberplate? I cant speak to DVLC for advice they dont answer. So here goes.
I bought a private plate from a friend who has a retention certificate.
I have resgistered the plate for my car with DVLC.
If my friend gives up the right to retention , do I need to apply for a retention cert in MY name.??
I am a little confused thst i may not OWN the number even though i have officially transferred it to my car, and when he gives up the right to it, it will be on the market again?
Thanks

The plate only "lives" in one place.
While it's on retention, the person with the rights to it is the person named on the retention.
Once it's transferred to a car, the old retention ceases to have any value at all. The person with the rights to it is the keeper of the car.
DVLA own it. Always.0 -
Once it is assigned to a vehicle it belongs to that vehicle and the previous user has lost control of it, the V5 is now needed to do anything with he plate. You only need a retention certificate for a plate that is not assigned to a vehicle. The previous user of the plate should be the one that transferred it to your vehicle. Was this all done on line ? https://www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registration-numbers/give-private-number-to-someone

When you type the number in to the DVLA website is it on your car?
Have you told your insurer?
Have you bought new plates?0
