OK, thanks everyone. I am now reasonably assured this isn't evidence of some sort of car salesman dastardliness!

I would like to know if anyone knows if/how this car might have been affected by the VW dieselgate scandal? I have heard anecdotally that VW engines have been detrimentally affected (e.g. poorer fuel economy) by the software mods that came about off the back of the scandal. Would/should this car have had the software mods? Is it something to be concerned about?

The Seat must have come in with cracked front plate and been renewed for sale.  OP may want to check there was not more extensive front end damage.
The plates both ends have the garage's brand on them.
Thanks Adrian. I had not noticed that both plate have been swapped by the dealer.

Years ago, I bought a car from a dealer like that, 2 digits transposed in the front plate.
I drove it like it for a couple of years, then cracked the front plate. When I got a new one, made from the rear plate (No I haven't a clue what my registration is, then or now) It was different to the one I took off!
Umm, did you consider looking at your V5C at any stage...? How have you insured and taxed it...?
The V5 was correct, so the tax & insurance were correct.
I can tell you the reg of my first car- DRF900E, and the cars my father had when I was a child, HJX742 was a Rover P4, 3536FD was a 3.8 MkII jag, then I had JRE919K a P6 V8 until 1980, after that they are all a blur.
I could recognise my car in a carpark full of clones, but I have to write the reg. down if I'm going to one of those "type your reg number" parking meters and it is out of eyesight.

I think I have worn out my short term memory- it must be SSD based and after a few hundred write cycles it stops working!

However, the minutiae of having C557 something on the front and C577 on the back escaped me and the dealer. Who can see both ends at once- and who needs to when you have a V5 with the VIN matching?
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Ah, OK. I guess it didn't occur to me that second hand car dealers put new plates on old cars.

It may have had private plates on it when it was traded in, or they've replaced the plates with ones with their business name on.

If it's been through the official network it'll have had the update applied.

Easy enough to check. Get the VIN and use the checker on the Seat UK website:

Many years ago, my brother in law had a brand new car (Renault 5 I think it was)  supplied from the dealer with a mistake like that (one digit swapped round) ....he didn't notice, and neither did anyone else for nearly a year.
