Duplicate transaction nightmare!

Options
Yesterday I tried to book two return RyanAir flights from London to Alicante for Monday via a low cost online agent called GotoGate. After taking some time saying it was processing my Apple Pay payment, the site then displayed “we were unable to process your request” and returned me to the home screen, whereby I had to fill out all the booking information again. This time the payment went through, but I subsequently received confirmation for two sets of flights- the site made a duplicate booking, even though it had told me the first payment hadn’t gone through.

I immediately called the online agent who informed me I should contact RyanAir within 12 hours and that there would be a charge to void the duplicate booking. After the conversation I then found RyanAir was closed until 9am this morning, and this was followed by hours of back and forth conversations with the online agent and my bank in an attempt to cancel the pending duplicate payment, which my bank attempted unsuccessfully to do.

Today I spoke to RyanAir who told me that the duplicate flights would be refunded within 4-6 weeks(!) This evening I found that both transactions have been debited from my account. This has wiped out my planned spending money for the holiday, not to mention wasted over 7 hours of my time on phone calls attempting to rectify the error made by the online agent when I should have been preparing for my trip.

I have therefore taken the sad decision not to go on my holiday. RyanAir said on the phone they would require a fee to move the flights. However in all honestly it is the agent’s fault that has caused me to cancel and I feel they should be held accountable. I am also now suspicious as to whether this error was not accidental after all and whether such practice allows this company to offer such low prices on flights. To put it bluntly I feel I have been robbed. What rights do I have regarding compensation from the travel agent?
