Can anyone please help me to understand how you set a 'timed' metre. I dont use a lot of water as my shower heats up the water as does my washing machine, i think! If I just use the 'boost' button on the metre every day for an hour will the water in the tank be safe from leigionella? or do you have to heat it up all night on the timed button? If it is the timed button, is that the particular time of the day or is it set another way. Sorry to ask so many questions but never had an economy 7 metre before and totally lost with it, as you can probably tell! I have storage heaters so will use the timer in the Winter but didnt want to use it in the summer and just maybe boost it for an hour, in the day, or can you use the timer to boost it for any hour in the night? Any help really appreciated.

When we had E7 a few years back, the cheap rate was from 12.30am to 7.30 am in the winter and 01.30 to 08.30 am in the summer. If you only need a small amount of hot water, just one hour for the water heater on the timer overnight should be enough0

Thank you for the replies. I was just a bit worried if I just had it on for an hour or two in the night to heat up the small amount of water I need it might cause a problem with Legionella.0

If you have the immersion heater on during the night when it's full price you'll be wasting lots of money. Some tariffs have a two hour gap in the cheap rate, so find out by looking at your meter when it's providing cheap rate. You can find out when it's likely to be cheap rate, but remember that mechanical clocks can drift and radtoteleswitches can vary by +/- 15 minutes from day to day.The best way is to make sure that the immersion heater is on a circuit switched by the meter, then it can never use full price electricity. If you use your own timer to shadow the E7 times it can be expensive if you get it wrong, e.g. if you're mistaken about the cheap rate times or a power cut means your timer has gone adrift.0
