Home broadband

I have had offers of broadband withdrawn by two companies, without any explanation in the last month. I have good credit ratings, and the first Talk Talk would only say that there was a technical problem. When I said that it did not make sense, because they used to provide my broadband services before I went to Virgin Media, they said it was because I was a past customer!
Upon complaining, I was told that someone else had claimed the phone number, or someone else has used my address, neither of which makes sense. Unfortunately, Plusnet cancelled the order I had placed today, without explanation. Online chat is down, and it refers you to a phone number which cuts the caller off after explaining that they are very busy to speak to any more people.
I am very worried I will lose my landline number because both Talk Talk and Plusnet seemed to have a problem with my landline number, but do not explain exactly what it is.
It's the number I have shared with all the companies I do business with, and also the one all my elderly extended family know to call me on. It would just be hugely inconvenient to lose the number.
Can anyone advise what I can do, to avoid losing the number.

Is VM your current provider and on what basis do they provider your service ( business or residential tariff ?)Have you moved address at some point in the past and taken the number with you or are you still at the same address ?
You mention TT as the provider before VM, did TT allocate this number, or did you take the number to TT from someone else before you took it to VM ?0
