If during the current circumstances you're not happy with the prices charged - you can always shop around to find a new salon. As with everything, consumers vote with their feet. If it's worth it - people stay - if it's cheaper elsewhere for the same item - they go elsewhere. I totally see the need for the increased fees - so I'd be happy to stay and support them, but you can easily try another salon and see how you get on.

And that’s the crux of it, I was only moderately happy.  So I wasn’t happy with a 40% increase.

I think if you'd mentioned the bit in bold in your original post, posters would have understood more.
I'm not sure I'd have been OK with a 40% increase by my hairdresser but I might have sucked it up as I've been going to her for 30 years (she was a young trainee at the time) and she's the only one I've ever been happy with.
But if I was only moderately happy, I'd be off somewhere else.

Given that there are now increased costs and reduced capacity, I don't think 40% is unreasonable.  If you don't like it, go elsewhere or skip it entirely.  Hair dressing isn't essential.

The National Careers Service (https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/job-profiles/hairdresser) suggests that the average hairdresser earns between 14K-30K depending on experience.  The government help was only 80% of salary.  I wouldn't be very surprised if people earning £30K need 100% of their salary to live, so that leaves a lot of people without enough while furloughed.  They'll be wanting (needing) to catch up now, or at least stop getting further and further behind.

Lets run through some numbers say before  all this you saw 15 people a day and charged £35 that is £525 in fees per day
Now you can only see 11 you would need to charge £47.72 to generate the same in fees and that is without factoring in PPE so £50 is probably a reasonable price if you can get a good price on PPE. Obviously a lot of businesses are taking some of the hit so a very reasonable compromise might be raising £35 to £45.
It is even more fun if you do a mix of NHS and private work. We used to get paid £21 per NHS patient and could see 15 a day (£315 ) now we get paid £21 per NHS patient and can see 11 a day ( £231) (  Plus we get no help with PPE costs. So how much do you put your private fee up? or do you limit NHS work?. We have increase our private fee from £35 to £45 but that does not cover things.

The dentists have got it even worse!

My Mum went to the hairdressers for the first time (we have been fully shielding). It’s only a small place and she was saying about the costs. The screens they had to put up were £800, £200 on hand gel (goodness how little time that will last), a large amount on the arrows on the floor, plus face shields, masks and disposable aprons. For the clients they have disposable towels and disposable Capes. They are spending a fortune on cleaning materials as they have to clean where ever a client sits. Only allowed 2 clients in at a time. This is ontop of being closed for months. Our hairdresser had only put up her price by £2 but my Mum said she should put it up more. I don’t think people are trying to profit from covid, they are trying to keep their business going and barely keeping their head above water
