I went to my usual salon last week.  The stylist was telling me how much costs have risen.  For example, gloves (which are single use) have increased from something around £8 a box to £18!

When I came to pay, I was told that in the short term, they were not offering the 20% discount I normally get for being a senior.  It increased my bill by around £9.  I was a bit taken aback as I was expecting an increase of £3 or £4.  However, I am optimistic that they will reinstate my discount when they have cleared the backlog of appointments. They are excellent hairdressers so I certainly think I get value for money.

Really the reasons have been given:
    • not as many clients can be in the salon as before,
    •  appointments last longer (at present) as everyone now needs a restyle rather than a trim since the hair has grown so long,
    • 1/2 hour between clients as everything is sanitised,
    • PPE & sanitiser costs as well as costs for visors and masks for the hairdressers. (and presumably masks for clients who come without!) Towels need to be washed for each client, disposable plastic overalls for clients...........etc
    yes, sadly costs have increased.
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

My hairdresser was very apologetic about the price she charged me this time, but seeing I've not paid for a haircut/colour for 4 months, now I have nice hair again, I'm still quids in.  Also, even at the increased price, it was still about 25% cheaper than the salon I used to go to before we moved across the country.

I know I will be seeing a price rise when I go to my hairdressers tomorrow for the first time since lockdown. All the reasons that have already been mentioned mean that I am quite willing to pay the extra. On the upside, I’ve realised that I’ve managed my hair myself pretty well, so I think I will be reducing my monthly appointment to every six weeks. Result all round!

I messaged my hairdresser who told me my regular service would now be £55 instead of £40, as she’s put her prices up.  I find a nearly 40 % increase a lot, it smacks of profiteering off the back of covid & how desperate everyone is to book in.  The basic materials haven’t risen. I know there was a long period of no income, but if they’d been declaring their taxable income they’d have been entitled to government help.
Anyone else found similar big price increases?
Do you think the grocery stores will be charging the same prices Pre-COVID?
Start taking a serious look at your receipts from now on and you will see how the prices have crept up?
After every customer cleaning have to be done and this comes with having to purchase extra cleaning supplies.
How do you know that basic materials have not risen?
    Did you receive government help?
No, I do not receive any government help, I’m not sure how that is relevant.
Yes of course there is extra cleaning, I just didn’t think it warranted 40%

Maybe the fact they've had no income for 4 months plays a part...
They will like other self employed people have been able to draw on government help, assuming they have been declaring their income fully.

Do you know anything about their circumstances?  Presumably they've not been earning for the past 3-4 months and maybe they're behind on the mortgage and at risk of being evicted?  It might be profiteering or it might be desperation, how can you possibly know?
The answer is quite simple - if you don't like the price rise find another hairdresser.

    Yes, I have already thanks

I booked in yesterday for later this afternoon, when I asked they said usual price plus £3.60 for PPE cover.
If it would have been £5 for PPE & cleaning I would have completely understood.
i do realise that people have been at home on furlough for many months, but the government have helped self employed people with 80% of their former income.
This lady is a one man band. So no reduction to only one person at a time.  It’s what she always did.

The basic materials have risen ( PPE per client ) but the biggest effect will be the squeeze on the number of appointments.
They will be spending £100's if not £1000's per month in PPE and be able to see ? 50% of people they did before. Its the new world will live in. Its even worse for dentists and cataract surgery!
The new hairdressers is £43 for the same, she’s also a one man band, small local salon.

Depending on what she charged before the lockdown she might also have increased her charges by 40%.
She may have always been cheaper than your old hairdresser so you could have been having cheaper service before.
