Changing from oil to gas central heating.

Hi all,

First off, I apologise if there are several topics on this. I’m not a frequent MSE website user.

Due to varying factors, we may have to look at switching our central heating from oil to gas. Has anyone done this recently, and what was the cost?

I’m unsure how much work would be involved, and the cost of it all! Would it just be the boiler that needs replacing? Do we need all new pipe work throughout the house? New radiators?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you 😊

Edit: It’s a rather large 5 bedroom Victorian end of terrace. I believe the house was supplied with gas when my grandparents bought it in the 50s, but grandma was scared of gas - hence the switch to oil.

Is there gas in the property, in your neighbours, in the street ?   If no the costs in the house will be insignificant to the cost of getting a gas supply to the property.

No gas in the property, but I believe the house did used to be connected to the supply when my grandparents originally moved in.

You should check(and hope) that there is a capped gas supply pipe in, or near, the house. Regulations have changed and for a boiler capable of heating a 5 bed house it will almost certainly need a larger bore pipe in the house. Gas meters for new installations now are on an external wall.

We switched to Gas from Oil and kept the same radiators, but because of the regulations covering Gas flues the new Gas boiler had to be fitted into an entirely different place from the Oil boiler, which bumped up the pipework costs.
As Cardew has pointed out, the present supply gas pipe to the house won't be large enough to run a modern heating system, and a new pipe from the street main will be needed - Our cost over a distance of 6 metres from pavement to house was £450
