Thanks for the great responses. Good to have a range of opinions. I live in a suburb of London and have three supermarkets within a five minute walk, so am a bit spoiled.
But I can only afford a small flat here.
This is what I had my eye on. I think it's fabulous!   https://www.onthemarket.com/details/8439378/

The agents appear to have a few period houses around the same price and then you would not have service charges.

OK, that's very central.  But you're paying for it.  You could get a three bed practically anywhere in York for that, and a four bed in most places.  With a big garden to boot.  For example, only a little further out.....

    Thanks for the thoughts.
Yes, I know. I've been looking for a fair while. If I'm honest, I want to be within an easy stroll of the centre. I would rather not have to use a car. And I am done with the family thing, so my kids are grown up and I'm fine with a spare room. I'm just taken by the grandeur! I have a preference for less rooms, but larger. And don't really care about a garden.
Each to their own, I know!

I live in York and it’s lovely here, there are plenty of nice areas close to town so you can walk  and although traffic can at times be an issue its only around Commute times. Bishopthorpe Road area is very nice with a lovely artery of properties.

I always thought Bishopthorpe Road was terribly overated.

In some ways I would agree but it’s easy walking distance to town and plenty of shops.

    Thanks folks. Food for thought!
  • I would just add that York is a fantastic city for cycling in. It's fairly flat and there are lots of off-road cycle paths, so this might help you on the getting around/supermarkets/parking areas. I live just outside of York on the train, and for the three years of my degree I caught the train into York and cycled to uni or placement each day.
