Living in York?

Anyone care to give any thoughts on this? My brother lives there and loves it, but I wanted to get a broader sense of how it is to live there. I'm looking at a place close to Tadcaster Road.

Lovely city but make sure it's not going to suffer from flooding so beware houses near the river.
Lots of history and tourists, good shops and Betty's tea room.

I've seen a place, but there is only residents parking and there doesn't seem to be many supermarkets you can walk to. I have three within a five minute walk here in London, so wonder if it's worth the move for a bigger property.0 -
Presumably York can expect to experience monumental house-price inflation if Boris moves great chunks of Parliament there.
That is what usually happens when Government funded administrative centres move.1 -
Tadcaster Road is near the race course, which in normal times hosts more than racing so it can get very busy, especially over summer and that's why there is residents only parking. There's a huge Tesco near the A64 so no problem with shopping.
Whilst it is a tourist hotspot, this has its downsides, very busy Easter to November.1 -
York is a wonderful place to live. It won't quite have the nightlife of a larger city, but that shouldn't matter to anyone 25+, but there's no shortage of pubs and eateries. House prices tend to be higher than the rest of Yorkshire.
Around Tascaster road is usually fine. Overall, crime is low compared to most cities, but there are areas I wound't live. Like Foxwood, Chapelfields and Tang Hall

It is a certainly like that in York. You can usually see the hot spots on the crime maps though."Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance" - Confucius1

I spent the first 18 years of my life in haxby and think it's a great place to live. My personal fave areas are dunningron, haxby, wigginton, strensall, Huntington, earswick. I don't mind parts of Clifton moor either or nether poppleton but wouldn't live knavedmire end due to traffic.HOME

I grew up in York. My parents still live there. It’s a very large village basically in that you can just about walk across it in a day and unlike big cities there is still that small town/village feel. The good: Tadcaster Road is close enough to the centre to walk in and out and on bus routes. York has lovely old buildings and plenty to see and do. There’s lots of good eating out and pubs. Plenty of stuff on your doorstep - The Yorkshire Moors are only 45 mins away by car, you’re an hour and a bit from Scarborough and Whitby which are nice seaside towns. Good train links. Really good local libraries. In comparison to other places I’ve lived (Newcastle, London) theres not huge amounts of anti social behaviour although obviously it does go on as with everywhere now.The bad: York is hugely expensive to buy property in and Tadcaster Road is amongst the more desirable areas to live so you’re at the higher end of a high price point anyway. Biggish property in York (say 4 bedrooms) can command a far higher price than a similar house in say Tadcaster, 10 miles away. York is very popular with tourists which means that in summer the centre can be overrun and become extremely busy and hard to get around. The local economy is geared around tourists first and residents second. This means that combined with high rents the prices to eat and drink out tend to be high for the North, although there are exceptions. Tadcaster Road is near the Knavesnire and York racecourse so on about 8-10 days a year your area is overrun with race goers and the mess they leave behind (cans, bottles, litter, etc). York hates the car - parking in the city is limited and expensive and it’s slow to get across the city. The ring road is mostly single carriageway so at times the city can grind to a halt.I love York. I lived there for 18 years and our main work office is based in the middle. All I’ll say is that when we came back from London to Yorkshire we didn’t move back to York, we live a few miles away. That shouldn’t put you off - it’s a great place - but it’s got downsides and it’s worth researching carefully what your money will get you a bit further away.1

I personally don't think York is that pricey. Its no pricier than the decent area of Leeds I used to live in. Lots of my old school friends moved out to market weighton, pocklington, Selby to buy their first houses as prices are less. However, if I'm moving to York I'd only want to be in York! Its horses for courses but I love living in a and York village and own two btls in different areas of the city so know it well.HOME
