Furloughed staff holidays. Mandatory carry over to next year?

I agree. Its another example of an employee seeing the headline and assuming a purpose and a level of entitlement which don't exist. It doesn't mean you can't offer a bit of compromise if you want to for good staff and longer term morale but no obligation.
Also, and quite significantly, to look after your business, building some leave into the furlough period before they return would be sensible. I don't think its abusing anyone or the scheme if its pro-rata to what they would have had anyway.
This employee might however be a bit miffed that their overly entitled request has made you realise you have been too generous rather than not generous enough !0 -
In normal times you are only allowed to carry over if you have already taken your legal minimum of 4 weeks plus 8 bank holidays so this would only apply if you have a holiday allowance greater than 4 weeks plus BHs.prowla said:Many companies allow 5 days carry-over, to be taken by the end of March, with any other untaken leave being lost.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Didn't go so well today. The feedback was that they felt is was unfair to ask staff to take holidays if they have no plans and are just going to be sitting at home doing nothing. It's a waste of a holiday day.

I'd now be making them take holidays by giving sufficient notice.1

Let the employee sulk. The matter is closed.Retired_Minky said:Didn't go so well today. The feedback was that they felt is was unfair to ask staff to take holidays if they have no plans and are just going to be sitting at home doing nothing. It's a waste of a holiday day.4 -

Yes, its tough, this year's plans and jollies have been spoilt by a pandemic - same for everyone.
Your business does not exist entirely for their convenience although it seems this may come as a bit of shock

I have 33 days a year plus bank holidays. I certainly dont go abroad for all of them and your employee has thrown her toys out of the pram.Retired_Minky said:Didn't go so well today. It is a real shame you have had this response when you have clearly tried to do the right thing by them. If nothing else it gives you some information about which of your employees care and which just want everything in their favour and do not appreciate how lucky they are. You're trying to run a business and it will be ridiculous if all employees carry over their holiday days. Sure you might let them carry over a few but they need to take at least some, probably most. Most reasonable people will understand that.Retired_Minky said:Didn't go so well today. We have had staff on furlough since mid March, we have forced all of them to take 2 weeks holiday during this time by giving the correct notice (twice as long as the length of holiday you wish them to take). In addition all employees must usec at least 50% of their holiday by end September - our holiday year runs April to March. There's been grumbles from a few but we need to protect the business and can't have everyone with 100% entitlement to use in 6 months when they return to the workplace! The majority of the team completely understand the situation.Really should be doing some work...4

Thanks for the replies. Doesn't seem like I have any choice but to upset the employee and force them to take the holiday.
Is there a particular format I need to do the notice informing them they must take the holiday?0
