@OP; The advice you've been given is correct. No firm worth its salt will hand you the V5, that document will never leave the premises if it is owned by the company, so don't think there's anything unusual in the fact you weren't holding it.
. It's worth it for the company to deal with this situation in a timely manner for sure, but you as an individual? You don't even come into it. The only way you would be on the hook is if the van had been given or sold to you, and I'm pretty sure you would remember that0 -

ThanksFor anything to do with the DVLA, always go to the gov.uk web site. Any other sited are just people grabbing payments off you to do things you could have done yourself.But, as others have said, you probably don't need to do anything.If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0
