Selling original number plate
Hello
I plan to buy a private registration plate for my car, the current registration (cars original) looks very much like a really common surname. I am wondering if I retain that from the DVLA when I put on my new plate, can I then sell the original plate so long as I sell my car with my new private plate on it when I do?

Hope this makes sense!
Thanks

You can retain most plates, however don't kid yourselves that it is desired by all others Sm1thy may be of desire to someone, however the previous owner of the car didn't see what you are seeing.1

Thank you, I had read that I retain it for £80 I just wasn’t sure if I could sell it while it is retained?I plan to buy my new plate anyway so if no one else saw what I saw then no harm no foul0

If you pay the money to retain it, another previously unused reg number is given. You can still get your own for your new car. You can only complete the sale with it on retention.1

A reg is a reg is a reg is a reg.
Yes, once it's on retention, you can sell it.

Wee joke, would rather not post it online but thanks for taking the time to reply.0 -
At some point you will have to post the plate online if you sell.1

the current registration (cars original)
If you are taking off the original car registration issued by DVLA at first registration, then no you cannot retain or sell it. DVLA keep it and it will reassigned to that car when the private number is taken off.0 -

Sure, they'll keep the original on ice if you simply put a vanity plate ON... but if you transfer the original off, you'll simply get an age-related never-previously-issued plate allocated instead.1
