Denied Business Account because I reside in England?!?!

Hi guys, I recently applied for a business account with the RBS, thought this would be easier as I have a current account with them....
I was denied due to the fact that I lived in England!!! Is this a thing??

    Did you apply in Scotland?

Seems odd - I was initially thinking that it may be related to their ongoing attempts to reduce their business banking presence but that doesn't appear to be specific to country of residence, are they perhaps wanting you to go to NatWest instead?

yes it is in their t and c - you have to reside in Scotland and promise to wear a kilt to get an account.

I'd try NatWest, who are, as Eskbanker says, the English version of RBS.
And, as you bank with RBS you'll find NatWest's systems very familiar.
NatWest will not require you to know how to call the haggis.

Just warning you that Natwest have a huge backlog of business account applications, and are taking between 4 and 6 weeks to process applications.

Natwest have split the banking group so RBS covers Scotland and Natwest covers England & Wales.

One of the downsides of increasing devolution and having a brand that is high profile within Scotland.

It might make you feel better, OP, to learn that RBS are also now turning down applications for personal accounts from people living in England.

They didn't turn down my application 2 weeks ago (primarily opened merely to take advantage of their cashback offer on investment accounts, which needed a current account first - and I no longer had one with them).

And I'm very definitely in England (though Wales and Scotland do seem more sensible places to live these days).

I did have an existing login though - as I still had an old savings account still live with them (small change only in it!) so that may have been a factor.  And I have been an RBS account holder of some sort continuously for over 30 years - but I doubt they even notice that!.

Are you sure that's correct? They still have some branches in England so they must still want customers in England, unless they plan to close those branches.
Their website just says you must be a UK resident.

What has UK devolution got to do with banking?
