A 'what would you do in this situation' dilemma - opinions welcome!

  • Definitely a house. They'll always be a better investment than a flat and no service charges or ground rent.

    If you have the will to do the work, I’d go for the house, for all the reasons already mentioned above:

    garden
    2 beds

    If not, the flat seems like an easy option

    Freehold house every time. Flat might look a good prospect but if owners start letting properties you might have to deal with noisy disrespectfull short term tenants. Similarly if owners fall behingd with  their service charges could be up to remainder to make up shortfall. Then there are leaks from upstairs, bikes stored in communal hallways general rubbish in recycling bins etc etc etc

    House would be my choice, own garden, free hold and less chance of neighbour noise or disputes. Plus a lot of flats have a service charge to pay on top of mortgage.

    Another one here who would go for the house.

    I've been looking at 2 bed houses and flats, and despite the price difference I'm not at all tempted by living in a flat.  I've had good and bad experiences of flat dwelling in the past, though they were rentals.  I don't honestly think I'd want to live in one again.

    The house gives you so much more scope going forward.
