Three report data to all three CRA’s.

Any lender credit checking won’t be able to see if a contract is SIM only, rolling one month, 24 month contract etc. It will simply be listed as a ‘telecommunications’ account.

Absolute insanity to miss out on a good mobile phone contract deal just to try to boost a mickey mouse score that no lender uses.

I don't care about the score. I do care about my credit history and mobile contract can contribute to it too. And this history is seen by lenders. Having one additional account with nice green "OK" every single month on my reports is definitely a good thing, isn't it? Plus, another direct debit, which is usually a useful thing to have. Most money savers know why.

Miss out??? No thanks, I'm not a typical consumer. I will never buy anything bearing interest, other than a house.
I've never bought a phone on contract in my life and I never will. It's like a car on finance. Don't wanna be overpaying for X years on something that already lost most of its value/price. I bought a brand new phone for myself last Christmas for 250 quids, it's 6.3" display and has everything I will ever need.  Only want the cheapest SIM plan because I don't call anyone (and if I do, it's via FB) and I don't even come close to using 1 GB per month. Usually around 200-300 MB. Browsing on a phone is a pain in the !!!!!! to me, so I do everything on my huge laptop. Some 6-7 quids per month SIM plan will make no much difference from what I pay now on GiffGaff.
iD mobile had something for 4 quids per month which would be fine for me, but it looks like it's no longer on offer.

I like your thinking and i did the same thing as you in 2017 when my credit file was a mess. I mean it was a disaster. I couldnt get anything, credit cards, bank accounts, sim only deals - nothing!

Then i somehow managed to get a 3 sim for 7 quid a month. Didnt use it, gave it to my nephew. Few months later, got an 02 sim - did the same cheap sim only and gave it to famiily. Then i got an ID mobile for 4 quid a month but i kept getting rejected by EE and Voda. One year later - i got a VODA sim finally and gave it too someone else then 6 months later finally EE accepted me.

In between this time, i got credit cards, bank accounts, overdrafts and even phone contracts with 02 for brand new i phones.

So your right - sim deals will help you and boost your credit eligibility and file. I have since cancelled most of them as i dont need them but it defo helped me. As for VODA - they like others have pointed out keep marking green ticks on your file even after your contract has ended. Normally i would complain but at the moment green ticks benefit me so i will let it run.

ID - do not report to everyone
    EE - report to everyone
    Voda - everyone
    3 - Everyone
    02 - everyone

    Good Luck

Thanks! That's what I was thinking. Should work the same way like with credit cards. At least that's what most veterans on this forum say again and again.

Btw, isn't it a problem if you change accounts/providers too often?
CRAs always say it's good to keep the same accounts open for a long time as it shows stability.

A single mobile account with "green ticks" will make little difference in the scheme of things

Btw, why pointless? Various types of accounts with good history look better on your files then just credit cards and nothing else. True or not?
    Partially true.

An account that has been paid up with no issues will usually be a positive... however what is your end game here? Depending on what you’re ultimately looking to apply for, and who with, it may actually make no difference whatsoever. There are a significant number of lenders that disregard telecoms from any form of internal scoring whatsoever. So it would in some cases make no difference whether it had 72 green ticks or a big red default flag. In fact, some lenders may choose to not even pull the telecoms data from your file in the first place.

So in summary, negligible difference in most circumstances so don’t go paying over the odds for your contract just in case it may help your credit file look better.

Complete and utter nonsense. Its a shame people are allowed to post on here giving false and inaccurate information to newbies.

I’m not sure which part you disagree with, but if you think a lender would treat a mobile phone account in the same way as a secured loan, for example, when assessing an application you are sadly mistaken.

Some lenders ignore telecoms and mail order completely, others will apply a different weighting on their internal scoring than they would for other types of account. This is fact, whether you choose to believe it or not.

Thanks. I've read stories of people who got rejected mortgages because of some insignificant bullsh....  from telecoms on their credit files. My logic is, if it can damage your history enough to cause you get declined a mortgage, then hopefully it can also help you if managed properly, even though just a tiny bit.

My goal is just to have great history as I want to take advantage of the best credit card deals, like 0% purchases, cashback, etc. CC offers are pretty poor right now but it will get better again. And one day, want to apply for a mortgage.
