    Looking good in there.
Just one teensy suggestion - A period rim latch (in black) with a brass knob would be more in keeping with the style of door.

If you are planning on doing any more work to walls or ceilings, it is well worth investing in a scaffold tower - I got a Super DIY from Loyal - Very quick & easy to assemble, lightweight, and sturdy (much better than the cheaper ranges that they do).

Thanks for the suggestion on the door! :)
We are actually lucky in that most of the internal doors are solid wood/pine with 8 panels (beautiful), but just with some old fashioned or cheap door furniture that we plan to replace.
This particular door, however... is actually hollow... and horrible!
The bottom was hacked off with a handsaw by my ex when the flooring went down as it no longer closed.... and the brass handle is quite unsightly, and has gloss all around the edges... in general it makes me want to cry!

So we'll definitely be looking for a new door, to look exactly the same but solid wood instead of cardboard or whatever this one is made of... and then new door furnishings at the same time. Just had a google of some black rim latches, and those look great!!!

Have a tour of the local building reclaim yards, you may be able to pick up a matching door at a good price. Also worth keeping an eye on skips in the neighbourhood - I've managed to salvage a full set of period four panel doors from houses that have been "renovated" in the last couple of years. Had them dipped'n'stripped, and are looking good once painted.
Had some reproduction rim latches from a seller on ebay - Whilst the steel used for the casings is a lot thinner & lighter than the real thing, the knobs are good & heavy. On balance, a good match compared to the few originals I have.

Thanks everyone! I've showed him your comments and he is feeling much happier with himself :) (afterall, it's well known most comments on a forum are insanely blunt and not really complimentary unless it's true).
He is extremely happy, but i'm afraid that he's said he's unavailable lol! That includes any other DIY that we need doing around the house for a while as well

The wardrobes went up this weekend (tall Pax ones) which fit to the ceiling with just 1cm to spare.... (good measuring) and the room is amazing! Somehow, even though our furniture is now much bigger, there is more floor space and the whole room feels almost twice as big.

Our bedroom is now our favourite room in the house, and we've just been admiring it. It doesn't feel like ours! This wall has completely changed the whole feel of the wall, and chipping off all that damp gypsum and cement has made the air clean and given us about an extra half-foot of space too...!
  • It looks absolutely fantastic, and so very much worth all the mess and hassle! xxx
