TravelEx Cash Cards

Hi,
My wife and I both have TravelEx Cash Passport cards, I recently heard that TravelEx were in financial difficulties so I was considering taking out the money we have on the cards but before I do does any one have any further knowledge and advice please.
Thanks.

It's likely that your card no longer works, did you not receive email notice a few months ago? Try to get your money from them if it's not too late.

  • Have been in contact with them and although access to the cards was blocked they are now up and running again.

    Get your money out ASAP.

If you want a facility to use overseas I suggest you open an account with Starling bank. It is based in £ but offers competitive exchange rates and zero atm charges (just bear in mind that overseas banks usually impose an atm charge which you can't avoid).

You can of course use the Starling account in the UK like any other debit card. I have a Monzo card which is similar in operation and use it all the time as it's a way of protecting my main current account from card fraud.
  • I have had 2 Travelex cards now for a couple of years 1 for me in the UK and one for Daughter to use in Oz. All worked well. However just realised the card has expired. My local shops (Tesco and Asda) in house booths are still closed due to Covid so tried to order new cards online but the system is not working. Takes you as far as taking card details then crashes. Spent time on the phone to their customer services and was left with 2 choices - either wait until system was up and running again or pay cash back into my UK bank account. Finally customer service have offered to send me out new replacement cards RESULT. Please keep an eye on your card expiry date as you are not notified when they expire

No, the ideal result was their offer to refund your cash to your bank account, then you could escape the fees, bad rates and hassle of such cards and use the modern fee-free solutions, or even your regular bank card which wouldn't cost more overall than cash passport type cards.
