I've just had lunch at Costa for half price.
It never ceases to amaze that people are never satisfied with a generous offer and expect more ie other offers allowed on top.

  • I just get irritated that business owners try and maximise their profits.  We ate out today at a place where I usually get a 10% discount.  I showed the card but they said no, you only get the 50% off, I said that wasn’t inline with the scheme as the govt suggested normal discounts would carry on - she said then they’d be giving a 70% discount - I wasn’t going to stand and argue but that’s completely incorrect.

They should apply the normal 10% before the 50% - by not doing they will now get more money for our meals than they would have done ordinarily eg:
    normal total: £40
    10% discount off: £36.00
    EOTHO discount off: £18.00
they would still claim the other £18.00 and take the same 10% discounted total amount for the meal.  By not offering this they claim half the normal total (£20) which means they have earned more money than they would normally on that sale.

It becomes extra profiteering on a scheme designed to help them boost their sales and while I’m not going to argue over a few pounds difference, it doesn’t really make me want to return to somewhere that is just trying to grab all the money they can, and doesn’t really care about their customer.  Plus we will all pay for this in the long term!

Just had lunch at a local cafe listed on the website as taking part in the scheme. When I went to pay they swore blind they weren't in it and we had to pay full price (even when they were shown their listing on the .gov page). It's a place we go to anyway so they've lost future repeat business for the sake of scamming us  & Rishi out of about a tenner. Weird.

How dare a business try and maximise their profits... it's almost as if that's what the purpose of a business is  ;)

But i can understand why they are doing it, the 10% discount they offered you before wasn't because they were just being nice, it was to encourage you to eat there more often so they make more money overall. Now they have a 50% discount to encourage you to eat there so they don't really need to do anything else. Plus after being closed for so long to sit in customers and with a reduced capacity i think they deserve to actually make a bit of money now don't you.

I think that’s the point of the scheme, to help them to make a bit of money and I don’t begrudge that.  I don’t like that despite the clear govt guidance that businesses should run the scheme alongside other offers many seem to be choosing not to.  It makes me less inclined to eat out - but if I’m a minority then that’s good for them, they won’t miss me and I’ll save my cash!

Well i don't think being given a 50% discount in replacement of a 10% discount would make people less likely to eat out.

Knowing that the business is clawing back the (up to a) tenner from the government, and the withdrawn 10% from the customer, will probably make regulars of the establishment less likely to visit in future however.

Noticed that ''not to used in conjunction with other offers'' thing on a few ads and thought it was a bit off too. Understrand why they are doing it, but I'm sure it will make some people think about usng the business when this 50% is finished.
Me and my daughter had a Subway for lunch for £4.28. Bargain.

Although our local pub/restaurant has signs in the windows saying they are part of the scheme, our bill arrived with no deduction. They said they only gave £10 off if customers requested it. So do check your bill.
