Re Importing a vehicle you previously had registered in the UK.
I'm reimporting my motorcycle after permanently exporting it 18 months ago. I can't get through to DVLA for advice and have found conflicting advice online. I've seen the general rules for importing which talk about NOVA application to HMRC. This says it applies if you have bought a vehicle outside the UK which I haven't. I bought it new in the UK, shipped it to Spain 18 months ago and now want to bring it back. I found a thread on another site that said he was doing exactly what I'm doing and HMRC told him he didn't need to do NOVA.
Obviously I need MOT, insurance before I can get tax and I'm told that DVLA will, almost always reregister the vehicle under its previous UK number so I think I can sort MOT on either the VIN number or the old registration and insurance on the old number.
I've checked the DVLA vehicle enquiry service online and my bike is shown as SORNed. I definitely sent them the paperwork to permanently export it and have definitely not SORNed it myself so that would suggest DVLA set it's status to SORN?
Any help much appreciated.

When you look at https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ does it show the export marker as "Yes" or "No"?
If "yes", then DVLA are aware it's been exported, and you'll need to go through the V55/5 route to re-register it here.
If "no", then just apply for a new V5C and tax it.0 -
Export marker = Yes (I hadn't noticed that)
So I need to do V55/5 but no need to go the NOVA route with HMRC?0 -
The NOVA questions don't make sense. the questions assume I have bought the vehicle in the EU. I did I suppose since I purchased in the UK but I think the inference is that I bought the vehicle elsewhere in the EU and am now importing it to the UK. What I actually did was purchase in the UK 15 years ago. Permanently exported in 2018 and now want to import back to the UK.0

Also to complete the V55/5 it says I need a certificate of conformity. I've never had one. There are a couple of websites selling them but neither have them for Harley Davidson motorcycles. I'm begining to wish I'd never taken it out of the UK.0

This from the Harley Davidson, "To request supporting documents from Harley-Davidson Motor Company customers must provide the title or registration for the motorcycle to demonstrate that the requestor owns the motorcycle". Will a UK dealer accept a Spanish registration document I wonder. I naively assumed that since the bike was originally registered in the UK it would be easy?...0

I'm surprised you registered it in Spain without one.0 -
All the information I needed must have been on the V5. Yes it was first registered in 2004.0

Older than 10yo, no need for a CoC or SVA. Just an MOT.
Just fill in the NOVA best you can - there's zero to pay in any case...1 -
Great! Many thanks for your help. That makes it much easier.0
