Upstairs Noise

How can they justify shouting, screaming arguments as 'cultural'? So their poor neighbours have to put up with it because it's 'normal' to them? Pffffft not a chance.

I totally get how you feel. When I lived in a ground floor flat I had awful neighbours just like this above me and it was a nightmare for 2yrs. They were polish I think and would shout and scream and each other from the moment they woke up. Screaming at their kids. Stomping, slamming, screaming. Plus loud music and TV day and night. They’d also have huge groups of people over day and night. There always seemed like there was a heard of elephants running on my ceiling. It drove me to despair. I used to purposely stay out after work to avoid coming home. Used ear plugs at night. I was miserable. I eventually moved as it was too much. Thankfully I rented so didn’t have the issue with trying to sell.I spoke to them many times but they seemed ignorant to the fact they were so loud and also said we were different cultures so I didn’t understand what their dynamics were like. It’s difficult if you own the place as like others have said even when you move you have to declare neighbour problems/disputes.If having a word with them isn’t helping. Try the landlord next. And then the local authority. They can install listening equipment in your flat and prosecute if the noise is unreasonable.Hope things work out.2

@tesspee Unfortunately, as others have mentioned, LLs are often unlikely to care as long as they are getting paid and the tenants aren't trashing the property. We had a similar issue (fortunately while renting) where we had an English family upstairs that never left the house, had parties every evening with 20 people in a 2 bed flat, smoked weed everywhere, took over all the communal spaces with their junk and had a unhealthy obsession with hanging large nationalist flags that would sometimes extend all the way down to our bedroom window! Needless to say, we scampered at the end of our fixed term.I feel for you and hope some resolution is found, good luck!1

A shorter post this time ..
I had a brief look at your post . I notice that you are in a leasehold flat , and that the undesireables moved in only a week before you did .In this situation imho your actions should be : email to your managing agents / find landlords address from land registry and send a strong letter also emphasising that you own your flat / try to find out who the letting agents are and drop them an email and also phone them .When sending landlord a letter, do not tell managing agents You are doing that .Send the email now ..2 -

We've just bought the lease of a downstairs flat in a small 1 bed Victorian terraced house - our first house which we love.
Unfortunately, a lot of noise is part of the course with converted properties. As it's rented, you'll probably find that people will come and go and so will the noise issue, forever. Just wait until someone with a newborn and a toddler moves in!
You can look for ways to soundproof the house, or you can try to find ways to live through the noise, or you can start what is likely to be a never ending battle with various people that come and go from the flat above.
