How to close RBS current account?

I read https://www.supportcentre-rbs.co.uk/Searchable/996981582/How-do-I-close-an-account.htm which suggests you can close your RBS account online.

I've followed the instructions there and then when i didn't see the option i went round clicking everywhere and still couldn't see it.

Can you cancel online and if so how? As that links instructions aren't working for me.

I don't have an RBS account to close, so can't try closing it online. Generally speaking, the easiest way to close a current account is to switch it into a current account you have with another bank. Might be worth waiting a bit to see whether any switch incentives appear.

Can’t give you any help with directly closing the account with RBS, but I find the easiest way to close an old current account down is to use the current account switching service, and switch the old unused current account Into one of my existing accounts. That way any payments that accidentally try and go into the old account automatically go into my other account, and the account closure is taken care of for me by the bank doing the switch, along with the other features of the switching service
  • I was previously with RBS just a couple of years ago and when I wanted to close my account I wrote a letter to my branch and said I would like the following accounts closed with the account number and sort code and worked fine with all of my RBS accounts. At most it takes about a week or 2 and then check online banking it should have disappeared if not give your branch a call and see if they have received the letter. This has worked with any bank I have needed to close an account with.

I usually do close accounts by letter & post. I was hoping to save on paper, envelopes and stamps though if there was an online option - which that link says there is.

As far as switching goes, I've done most of the switches and those i haven't i'm not eligible for. I have now bagged all the RBS switch money. There's no direct debits or standing orders on the account so i don't actually need to 'switch' them for any real reason. I just want them gone so that there's 5 less accounts for me to manage.

I have a dormant RBS account and am using it for the £50 RBS invest promotion mentioned in the Savings section.

Might be an option for you.

I wasn't aware of that so thanks for the tip. I'll take a look when i'm not so tired.

I looked briefly and think i need to open an ISA (i can't - i've already paid in to one this year) or a GIA (whatever one of those is). I'll have a see tomorrow or this weekend some time.

A GIA is a General Investment Account. Same as ISA, except the gains are taxable income.

    That's the correct link.

Well worth having a good read of the link. Bigadj has been particularly knowledgeable on there.

Ive plumped for a low risk type of GIA.

Minimum initial of £100 and then £50 a month from August for a few months and close in November.

    Good luck

Does having an ISA open and contributed to within the current tax year impact on whether you can open this GIA?

If so then that'll be me out then unfortunately.
