I wonder how you ever survived without nicknames for your payees. I am sure Santander CS will wonder, too.Deleted_User said:
It will depend on how much business they do and how many payees of the same name they have. If every payee you have on your list has a different name then obviously it's of no concern to you. However, in my case Santander have set me up as a Select customer getting priority service due to the amount of business I do with them. I have over 20 payee accounts all bearing my own name and it's not acceptable to me if there is not an easy facility (such as a nickname) to distinguish between them.happy_hazelnuts said:I was wondering how many people currently with Santander would consider switching to another bank that has a nickname field purely for this reason
As to being Select: it doesn't make any difference whatsoever, and 20 payees in your own name isn't exactly a lot. For comparison: out of my 75 active payees 64 are for my own accounts, and over the 9 years I had my Santander account, I have set up over 350 payees, mostly for my own accounts. I never once felt I needed a nickname for any of these payees. Oh, and the only reason I am no longer Select is that I downgraded to a 123 Lite as the 123 Full Fat is no longer competitive. I can assure you that there is nil difference in the online or app banking, or in the phone support.0 -
Santander have never prevented you from making sure that your payment goes to the right account.Deleted_User said:It's just that Santander prevents me from using it correctly because of their failure to allow me to identify each of my dozens of "payees" in a way that's understandable to me and gets the payment into the correct external account.
If you choose to use the name matching facility, you are simply making it harder for yourself to pick the right account. You are in control.0 -
They are offering you the benefits, as are all the mainstream banks. However, a side-effect is that anyone choosing to misuse the payee name field for something other than the actual payee name now has to accept that doing so effectively precludes use of the new validation facilities, but it's your choice, it's one or the other, as colsten rightly says....Deleted_User said:

You retain the Select status if you move to the 123 Lite account - at least I have - and in my experience there is a difference in phone support0 -
I didn't [have the choice to] keep Select, and I haven't noticed any difference in phone support. Mind you, that might be because I very rarely have any reason to ring them. When I do ring them, I still call 0800 032 3323, and they happily talk to me.gt94sss2 said:colsten said:Deleted_User said:

Should banks require that you call them and listen to a 10 minute fraud awareness script for each new payee you set up for which CoP does not match if they do not provide a facility to associate a nickname with a payee?

God I hope not, with the increase in security it's actually becoming a bit of a pain at times.masonic said:Should banks require that you call them and listen to a 10 minute fraud awareness script for each new payee you set up for which CoP does not match if they do not provide a facility to associate a nickname with a payee?
The Santander app does a much better job showing all the information in one go, the online offering is pretty naff actually in comparison as it shows payee and not much more, I'd much rather know the sort code, account no. and reference rather than when I last used the payee and for how much. (Why would I care about that, I can find that info in a statement)
Instead you need to click the "take me to" on the right hand side and select "payee details" to see these. Considering people using online banking would normally be using a larger screen than a mobile it seems ridiculous not to include all the details without having to click through to another screen.
RBS/NatWest have used a better solution.
You do the CoP check at the beginning and once that matches the next screen is like the old style one where you can write whatever you want as Payee Name, limited to 18 characters, and this Payee Name rather than the CoP name is what shows in your payee list.1 -
It's happened to me twice now out of 2 payees. Same account, Lloyds group. Fortunately I won't have to link up any more of accounts to this one in the foreseeable future, but it would certainly put me off using the account for my everyday banking.kaMelo said:

Santander never "were a building society". The Santander Group bought Abbey National (a bank), A&L (a bank) and the savings arm of B&B (a nationalised bank when Santander Group bought them).Deleted_User said:
You only had your Santander account for 9 years? If so you have very limited experience. I suspect you were knee high to a grasshopper when I opened my account when they were a Building Society and way before the Santander name arrived .
Leaving that to one side, we are talking about the Select account, which didn't become available until late 2010. I was one of their first Select customers, and my first account with Santander was an ex A&L account.
Anyway, coming back to your vast Santander experience: I wonder how you did you ever survive with them for so many years without having a nickname for your payees. No need to explain though.0 -
There seems to be the solution to your problem: just switch your Santander accounts to Natwest/RBS.Deleted_User said:
I have an account with them too and they use this sensible way of enabling you to describe your payee while still using the exact account name to ensure the payment matches. Santander just waste space in in the payee list showing last payment date and amount rather than allowing customers to describe the payee in their own words.kaMelo said:RBS/NatWest have used a better solution.
