LTSB, A&L, Nationwide & Halifax offer Visa Debit cards, but why not upgrade to a Maestro card with HSBC?0

It is much better to have a Visa Debit card. They have better acceptance worldwide.0 -
Maestro is owned by Mastercard so should be accepted where the Mastercard sign is shown, as long as they accept debit cards.
Just as a Visa Debit card should be accepted where a Visa sign is shown.
Mastercard is more popular than Visa in Europe and Visa is more popular than Mastercard in North America - though Mastercard is growing a lot faster than Visa.

I Disagree,
You can generally use any Visa card (Electron/Delta/Credit) as Visa any place in the world (particularly Internet sites)
You cannot do the same thing for Solo/Maestro. It will not be accepted as Mastercard since Mastercard starts 5 and Solo/Maestro 6.
All Visa cards start with 4.
It is far better to have a Visa debit card than a Mastercard one.0 -

I agree, I use 18866 for cheap calls, just had to change payment method with them because the don't accept Maestro anymore. (strangely they had no problem when it was Switch).
When I was in Cyprus my Maestro card was always looked at funny before being swiped while Visa was accepted without a second glance.====0 -
Nowhere I have been in Europe accepts Mastercard and not Visa, its generally either both or neither. Coupled with the fact that Visa debit cards are accepted anywhere where you see the Visa symbol, and maestro isn't accepted under the maestro symbol leads me to believe that Visa is the better card period.0

Just so you know, HSBC are now issuing Visa Debit rather than maestro so you can choose them as long as you qualify for it.Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
