I bought my son his first car is September last year and was told it had a new MOT, he got stopped today as the MOT ran out last December!!
He is worried sick as only driving since late January. The police let him drive home and said he would get a letter, can anyone advise what to expect? The car is in my name.

Probably a fixed penalty of £100 (but no penalty points).
This would be of greater concern to me:The car is in my name.In particular, who is the policyholder for the car's insurance? Beware of "fronting":

Thanks I am the policy holder and he is the main driver on the policy, and only commuting to Tesco for work so no issues there. If fixed penalty is the way then I guess thats a lesson learnt.

And nobody actually bothered to check the MOT at any stage? Neither of you looked at the certificate or at https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history at any stage before or after buying the car?richash147 said:I bought my son his first car is September last year and was told it had a new MOT, he got stopped today as the MOT ran out last December!!

The driver is liable.
No points, £100 if they issue a fixed penalty, income-related fine up to £1000 if it goes to court.3 -

In the meantime roll up your sleeves and get back down to the dealer and cause a stink and ask for new MOT and fine paid. They will of course deny all knowledge but you might feel better.

Very good! But if the OP's son was in that salary bracket he probably wouldn't be living at home and driving the parents' car ...AdrianC said:

I'm pretty sure the OP's son isn't Dave Lewis0
