Oh I've been slated on here haven't I! Yes you all correct that utility bills in the tenants name are not the LL responsibility. But LL hasn't made clear if they rented with or without bills so it was added as LL appears to be new to renting and much of the OP is confusing.
Also while there isn't a set list of what debts are paid 1st, greatcreated, deposits are not for paying rent at the tenants will.  I listed what should be paid for in MY opinion and yes debts do come out of deposits but in this case the tenant is telling the LL to use the deposit to pay rent owed, which in MY opinion is unreasonable, if you wish to treat debts in a different order or all as one you are very welcome to!
Thank you those who clarified my comment.

You are quite right about the "let's be nice" ethos; and, yes, a report from you about some of the things said to you is what is normally advised by MSE in cases where people are rude to you and call your views rubbish.

There is a difference between calling someone 'views', i.e. an opinion, rubbish (which I agree is generally unnecessary) and correcting when someone is stating things as fact that are incorrect, whether flat out incorrect or easily misinterpreted (I think this is more important mistakes are corrected than it is to be 'nice'). Don't really see the point in encouraging people to report others for this but that is of course your prerogative.

Thank you but it's a bit more serious IMHO. Firstly, the word "rubbish" was not applied to an opinion but to facts. Also, the whole posting from beginning to end is offensive, as the recipient said he felt in a subsequent posting. And, finally, to end by telling someone not to post on this Forum again is just plain rudeness. I have a feeling that you would have been livid if you had received a reply like that to one of your posts, and you would have reported it. But , as you say, that is of course anyone's prerogative. I am just observing what I and any objective viewer would observe. I feel the aggrieved party in this case showed great dignity and great restraint and politeness, which makes him IMHO by far the better man ( with the "be nice" ethos)  and the real asset to MSE.

Op go and get some basic legal advice from CAB, or pay a solicitor for a couple of hours of their time or something, the problem with the internet is that there are too many people trying to be the top "expert" on any given topic, and this can lead to loads of information that you don`t need or that may be incorrect. Did you put the deposit into a deposit protection scheme?
