I did have some previous speeding convictions and one claim for a minor accident that I took responsibility for. This was in the 30 plus years of having my licence, my licence was clean at the time of the offence
Clean as in nothing within 3yrs totting, 4yrs recorded, 5yrs they ask, or longer?

All speeding convictions were over 5 years old and motor accident may have been about 5 years

As Adrian pointed out there is statute law that Insurers cannot cancel / void a policy due to a non disclosure providing they would have covered you had they know the correct details and as I pointed out you had not intentionally misled them.

They do have a history of cancelling policies incorrectly.

I would recommend you request a copy of all data they have on you and particuarly as for all call recordings (This is assuming you are confident you did tell them)
Once you have that data you can then make an "Official Complaint" which they're duty bound to properly investigate and report back to you. (These processes won't be amazingly quick). You then have the option of the Ombudsman, should the matter go to the Ombudsman and they rule in your favour they will require Hastings to put you back in the financial position you would have been had they not made the mistake.
I would also recommend you obtain a quote for car insurance from Hastings with the conviction (But not the cancellation) disclosed (You will need to adjust the date of the conviction so it would be of a similar age as it would have been if declared correctly originally). This may help your complaint in showing they may have covered you had the SP30 been declared, however it is not conclusive as sometimes Hastings act as a broker and also Insurers acceptance criteria can change over time.

Assuming you have told us everything and you have a fairly standard car etc then I think the chances are fairly high Hastings would have accepted you had the speeding been declared.

As I mentioned before Insurers cross refer against quotes they provided at the time via comparison sites so if you obtained a quote with the speeding they may produce this as evidence you intentionally misled them.

Once you get the transcripts of your calls / data etc hit us up for advice on the "Official Complaint"

  • dacouch - that's really useful advice to know.  (Especially for people who allow auto-renew without properly checking the details).

Quick update I have recieved a letter advising that they cancelled the policy as if they had known about the conviction they would not have provided cover. Does anyone know if this is correct, hastings direct wont insure you if you have 1 sp30 conviction?

Whether they would cover others with 1xSP30/3pt/£100FPN is not really relevant. The question is whether they would cover with that in addition to all your other factors. Others may have different factors which would lead to different underwriting decisions.

Any insurer that has a strange Olde English name should be avoided, is my take from the insurance issues I read about on here.

Wouldn't insure because of an SP30............aye right, lying, cheating barstewards.
