Work from home - self assessment

Martin has an article on this. It does not say where in the self assessment. There is a linked discussion. I just read all 8 pages and it has been asked but not answered. Some claim to have found it but have then buuggered off.

Martin doesn't write the articles the MSE team does. That they detail every little detail of the P87, a form dedicated for this purpose and with already clear instructions, and don't provide any information on the self assessment other than saying it can be used to claim in it to me says they don't know either. I'm hoping this section of the forum has knowledge and experience to clarify.newlease said:Martin has an article on this. It does not say where in the self assessment. There is a linked discussion. The original question was about claiming on the self assessment tax return, in which case you use box 20 of SA102, as explained in my earlier post.
If you are not due to complete a tax return, see https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6173009/working-from-home-for-last-few-years-can-i-cut-taxes#latest0 -

Yes, I was asking about self assessment in line with the title and original question. The P87 process is clear. In your earlier posts you wrote box 20 as your assumption, have you since found confirmation it is so? I had read SA102 notes previously, but it is not clear. It could be box 20 based on the "Other expenses" part but it certainly does not fit the "capital allowances" part or the examples listed. Based on the brief explanation in SA102, Box 17 Business travel and subsistence expenses is a better fit with one of the examples being "business expenses, such as phone calls" which is an example of the mandatory work from home expense tax relief.

I think it is the "other expenses" part. It isn't travel and subsistence. I think the reference to telephone calls there refers to calls while staying in a hotel that use the hotel system, for example. I can't imagine anyone will care though. Explain what you have done in the notes on the return.0

I have decided not to bother this year. I only had one week in the 19/20 tax year. Tax relief on £4 is not worth the faff of potentially having to explain the other comments section to someone from HMRC or time reading many opinions on which box this belongs in first place. I will submit it when doing the 20/21 tax year, it should be more clear by then where this should go officially. I have 19 weeks so far already and with higher £6 weekly rate it will be worth the effort.0
