Work from home - self assessment

Hi,
Nearly completed my tax return but as the last 3 weeks of the tax year ended up working from home due to Covid19 I had heard that you can claim up to £6 per week I thought maybe at least still get this in for a few weeks but will certainly be including in 20-21 return as have wfh since and looks like will continue for some time.
Anyway, trying to find how to include on the return for these 3 weeks in 19-20 and going round in circles.
Do you have to persuade your employer to pay you the extra £6 paid as expenses to start with but taxed in your monthly pay? Then include as an expense presumably?
If this is the case then will have missed the boat for last year as cannot go back in time to be paid it in the first place I suppose?
Thanks
Andy

    See https://www.gov.uk/tax-relief-for-employees/working-at-home
    Note the introduction:
"You may be able to claim tax relief for some of the bills you have to pay because you have to work at home on a regular basis. You cannot claim tax relief if you choose to work from home."

If you go through the calculator it simply tells you to claim the expenses on your self assessment return. I assume box 20 in SA102 is the place, but there will be others who can confirm this or correct it.

If you pursuade your employer to pay you the allowance as untaxed expenses, you would not then claim it as an allowance in your tax return.
I suggest asking the employer for any additional cost right now is probably not wise.
If your employer does not pay you, then you can consider the claim for the allowance through your tax return, so you benefit by 20% or 40% of the value as a tax reduction.

    Note it’s £4 for 2019/2020

i did SA online and it was not obvious. I put it in the 4th box “other” under expenses and there was a place for notes.

Hi thanks for your prompt replies.
Yes I need only to do this on my tax return. So, I will not ask for more from my employer which indeed is the right thing to do.
I suppose then it is considered a cost as I have already paid out for the facilities at home so therefore is an 'expense'. I am doing the form online and do not recognise box 20 SA102. How would I find this and what actual figures would I enter when I do? £6 per week x 3 weeks = £18?

Thanks so much for your assistance on this. A very small matter but everything counts!!

    Regards

    See https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/self-assessment-employment-sa102 for where box 20 is. Remember it's £4 a week for 2019/20.

    Great thanks for this.
I dont think the online forms put box numbers on though so still a but confused exactly where this is to be entered on the system. I will have another look, I think there are some options from memory that ask if had any expenses so if checked later on it might show a box to enter the figure.

    Noted on the £4 thanks

I’ve done it recently and there are no numbers but very similar titles e.g. “employment expenses” and “other expenses” so looks very similar to the form.

If you had 3 weeks at £4 a week = £12 and saved £7 tax you did exceedingly well. It is possible, if you are in the withdrawal of personal allowance band.

So is it "Other expenses and capital allowances"? I have to say yes to  the question "Do you wish to claim any employment expenses or capital allowances while working for ..." in the tailoring section?
