Have you spoken to your local council if you have children and cannot rent you will be homeless and hopefully they can house you even if you do work.

only just realised i had an actual ccj, more than happy to pay anything up front.

AdrianC debts go back 12/15 years still chasing me which is fair enough. (ccj only from 3 yrs ago)
If you haven't cleared your debts, then you do not have savings. You're only lying to yourself, and (presumably) to your creditors. Clear your debts before you start to save anything beyond the most basic cushion.
i thought it was just rooms, too old to be sharing...
I'm not sure you necessarily have that luxury, do you?

Let's put it this way - if you cannot find a flat for your sole occupation, would you rather live with housemates in a shared house, or continue to live with your abusive soon-to-be-ex-husband?

boxer234 my children are adults and dont live with me....the council were helping me as they put me in temp accommodation due to domestic abuse (im home again) but again its the savings that are hindering me...AdrianC.i do have savings as im selling the family home and the equity will clear debts.... so i should then have the inheritance to fall back on.... as for luxury.... i am hoping to find something with the help of my inheritance that is not how ive been living like...in a small bedroom for years because of my partner..... i want to now have a life.... im not asking for the ritz... just not to want to feel suicidal every day because i feel ive no future....Comms69  i think i will clear the ccj.....its made me think as 1 estate agent actually asked if i had a ccj...so them highlighting is maybe causing that extra problem for me.....

If the debts are 12-15 years old and you haven't entered an agreement to pay within the last 6 years, they should be time barred and written off.  You credit record LA's and LL's can see should only show CCJs and bankruptcies - publically available information.  So its only the CCJ that will affect you when looking for somewhere to live.

A room in a nice house won't be quite what you are picturing in your head.  It could be a decent stop gap.  Some shared housing is quite luxurious.

deannatrois i think i need to go and look at them, there are a few... but they are very old, i was about 5 yrs ago in a debt management plan but husband wanted me to stop it.....he wanted to try the barred/written off thing...but its always stressed me.   im really thinking to clear the ccj.... as an estate agent has mentioned it....i just assumed the whole bad credit rating would be a complete no no.....youre right though regarding shared housing, i just need out of my house for my own mental welfare...

5 years ago would mean the debts aren't time barred.  I hope you are getting some counselling.  Can't always reset the mind and deal with what you need to on your own.

@alifpb66 before you go paying anything off post on the Debt Free Wannabe for advice on your debts. Debts become statute barred after 6 years (5 in Scotland) after you last acknowledged the debt so it might not be worth paying them off. Alternatively it might be worth sending prove it letters or offering full & final settlement to your creditors. The people on the Debt Free Wannabe board can give you more advice on those things. It might even be possible to get the CCJ set aside if you didn’t know about it.

Have you approached Women's Aid for advice?  They will probably refer you to Shelter for housing info but you may find they can offer you other support.  Wishing you all the best having taken the most important first step x
