I haven't been (yet) but the beach resort I hear the best reports about in Vietnam is Phu Quoc (http://www.vietnam-guide.com/phu-quoc-island/) which is just a short flight or bus + ferry from HCMC. Other beach areas are either too quiet with nothing to do or like Nha Trang are overdeveloped and designed for the Russian and Chinese package tour markets (think of a SE Asian version of Benidorm) rather than independent travellers

We went Phu Quoc 2 years ago and had an amazing time, its definitely like Thailand was before all the 5 star hotels. had an amazing time.
TUI fly direct to Phu Quoc from LGW.....so I'm whirring that possibility around in my head.  Will book flight only, and find where to stay myself.

I understand that Phu Quoc is blighted a bit by litter, so I suppose I'll need to look through that aspect.  Grateful for any accommodation recommendations, particularly as you recently travelled there prenton01.

    Hi Pete

    We stayed here https://hongbinbungalow.com/en-us?utm_source=gmb
Great bar to sit in at night overlooking the bay and amazing sunsets. It's up a hill but only 5 mins walk to main road and 10 mins to beach but plenty of taxis if you want one.
I read about the litter before we went but honestly didn't see that much. here are some pics
The 3rd pic is from Rory's bar owned by an Aussie great place to spend the day on the beach and have a few beers

This is what I like about Vietnam...
"Hmmm - that hotel looks nice. I wonder how much it is  for a week?"
"£140 per night? Nah, that's too expensive."
"Oh - it's £140 per week. That's more like it!"

You might need a bit extra for 3 meals a day plus a few bottles of Saigon Green Label beer.....that could stretch to another tenner a day. B)
