Other expenses is the last tick box under buying other equipment. When you go into it, you see this:

"You are eligible to claim these job expenses online

To claim these expenses, you need a Government Gateway user ID and password. You can create a user ID if you do not already have one.

Creating a Government Gateway ID usually takes about 10 minutes. It works best if you have:

    • your National Insurance number
    • a recent payslip or P60 or a valid UK passport"
This is only if you don't complete a self assessment return.

I assume the iPad would need to be "wholly and exclusively" for work purposes as is the common standard against which expenses are measured.

Wholly, exclusively and necessarily for employees, except travel, where it just has to be necessarily. Only the business proportion may be claimed.

Is this necessarily incurred though. Given OP's wording of needing it to do their job "properly" (not just a blanket need it to do my job), it would suggest it would fail that test.

Can be easily answered by looking at their colleagues and whether every one of them has also had to purchase one. It's either required by the job or the person, if it's required by the job then anyone doing that job will incur the same expense as there is no choice.
