Expedia refund query

Options
I have a booking for an apartment through Expedia. It is non refundable. The apartment is closed due to coronavirus. Expedia have advised me to cancel and I will be issued a voucher to use in that property at a later dat. My problem is that I have had to still take my holidays from work and will be unlikely to be flying to England again this year or next(as we have holidays already booked). Is there anything I can do or do I just accept that I have lost the money?

I wouldn't cancel. I'd make them cancel me on the grounds that it's not open and then you can try to claim a refund either through expedia or a Chargeback if you paid by credit card.
If you cancel it yourself they will argue it was your decision (already had that debate with them over my package holiday.)
    When is it booked for?

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

It it’s booked for the 1st - 3rd July and I’m coming from Belfast. It is down in Slough as we had intended going to to Legoland.

we see we’re actually getting the ferry to Scotland as we were supposed to be over for 2 weeks. But to come over to use the apartment at another time, it would need to be a flight as it is a full days drive there and a full days drive home again

Don't cancel they will need to cancel it as it is not open. If they refuse you can do a charge back on the grounds that they did not provide you with the service you paid for.

I phoned Expedia today and told them I wanted a refund, as I wouldn’t be able to use the voucher. Expedia have messaged me tonight saying that they are bound by the accommodation rules, that it is non refundable and can’t issue a refund. Does this now give me the right  to ask for a chargeback from my credit card? Will they do this even though it was non refundable?

If it’s non refundable and they have cancelled because the accommodation isn’t available then yes you can have a cash refund because they can’t provide the service you have paid for.

If you paid by your credit card then yes a chargeback is an option.

Who actually cancelled the booking? If it was you and the accommodation was available on the dates you booked then you are entitled to nothing, if it was them then you are entitled to a refund of the accommodation cost (not necessarily the booking fees and/or a processing fee) regardless of terms and conditions.

It was it was Expedia that cancelled as the accommodation was closed. I have filled out a chargeback form with my credit card.
