Complete failure on that one. On putting in the CD it said there is no printer driver that is compatible with your OS and crashed out.
I then downloaded the installation package (most up to date) from the Brother web site and ran it and it appeared to complete but on plugging in the printer it installed as drive F: with no media and on trying to print it said cannot print to the USB printer.

Next step to see if I can learn how to remove windows patches.
I'm still using Windows 7 - I'm not sure if the process is the same with W10 as I've never used it.

First go to Control Panel \ All Control Panel Items \ Windows Update
Then click on Installed Updates (Bottom LH corner on W7)
You then get a list of installed updates with their KB #
If you click on an update, you then get the option to uninstall it.

After installing this update, certain printers might fail to print. The print spooler might throw an error or close unexpectedly when attempting to print, and no output will come from the affected printer.

You might also encounter issues with the apps you are attempting to print from. You might receive an error from the app or the app might close unexpectedly.

Note This issue might also affect software-based printers, for example printing to PDF.
This issue is resolved in KB4567523.

Just reporting back in case someone else has this problem. I could only find one work around.
Yes I was easily able to remove the cumulative patch KB4560960 and KB4557957 was not in my history of updates. After that I re-installed the printer software again and the printer still would not work.
The final solution for now is.
I then did a system restore to a restore point prior to the update and once again the printer is working.
I will now find out how to and prevent windows updating till the next update is issued.
I note my update page is saying "The Windows 10 May 2020 Update is on its way. Feature update 2004" Also confusing because 10th of May is well past and the update that caused my problem was published after that date. And 2004 is 16 years ago if that is a date" I will see what happens if a 10th of May update becomes available.
    Many thanks

This sounds like another solution I need to try.
I find it all rather convoluted and confusing
It refers to resolving what seems to be my issue but also refers to the issue being created by update KB4557957.
My history shows I was never offered update KB4557957 or had it installed but I have seen another article that links update KB4557957 with update KB4560960 and I did have KB4560960.
My recent step back to an older restore point removed both update KB4560960 and KB4497165 and removing just KB4560960 did not resolve the issue but removing both (and maybe other stuff?) has.
Now looking at the microsoft description of KB4567523 I see it infers that it should have been offered to me via the automatic update and it wasn't and isn't. So I presume the updates offered are dependant on your start point (date?) version.
Anyway If I end up with my printer not working again I may try installing update KB4567523 manually but I'm out of patience so for now I will just run with an out of date version.
