About 10 days ago my windows 10 desktop PC did it s usual thing (periodically that is) when I went to power off it said "Shut Down and Update" which I did and all appeared to update properly. Then when I went to print on my Brother printer it failed to start printing.
So checked the printer with my Lap Top and it worked fine (It connects via USB).
Back to my PC I noted that I can see the print appear in the print spooler ( The active printer pop up window) and detect the data being sent to the printer but instead of printing the data just disappears.
I have had problems in the past but never seen that happen before.
I then clicked on the find printer option in the printer set up window and it says. "The Active Directory Domain Service is currently unavailable"
I looked for solutions to that on the internet and although I found a number of articles on how to solve that none of them worked or I was to ignorant to follow the advice.
At that point I decided the windows 10 update might have done it so I restored my PC using a system restore point created the day before the update and everything was then fine and I could print and use the PC as normal. So it was that.
Last evening I went to shut down and got the message again "Shut Down and Update" with some hesitation I did so. The first thing I did was check the printer and find the printer is not working again.
So I am now in a vicious circle I can revert to no update or have no printer.
I would really like to keep my PC up to date. So I need a way to get the printer working after the update.
Anybody know how?
Many thanks.

Agree with debitcardmayhem. Definitely sounds like a driver issue with your printer. Definitely not unknown with windows updates.I would delete the device and uninstall Brother app if there is one, shut down and let the update install. Get things up and running again before redownloading Brother app and reinstalling the printer.1

Is it a WiFi printer or connected via Ethernet or USB?
As per above, completely uninstall the printer including any specific apps. Reboot then Add Printer via Windows and let it find it. It'll add it (hopefully) and then (also hopefully) ask if you want to search for relevant device apps - do so and this may resolve the issues. (I did this with my new laptop and my HP all-in-one printer/scanner and it seemed to work OK, albeit I'm still on 1909 - I haven't updated to 2004 on this laptop ... I did update my old laptop to 2004 and that was OK - before it had the White Screen of Death).1 -

Thanks I read the article and it says to remove the offending cumulative patch numbered to KB4557957 and KB4560960 for Windows 10 2004 and 1903/1909 respectively. Not being too expert I wish they gave step by step instructions on how to do that. If anyone knows where those instructions may be found I would be grateful.alanwsg said:

Anyway before I do that I think I will try "delete the printer and then re-add" it sounds easier and I think I know how to do that; but according to the article Brother Printers are alive with complaints from users so it sounds like it won't be something easy.
Wish me luck as I said I'm not too expert. By the way its a USB connection to the PC.
Expect I will end up using the restore point to get to where I know the printer will work and try to switch off the Windows Auto update for a few months in the hope that Microsoft will have sorted it out by then.
Thanks all.0 -

Thanks all.Go to Control Panel/Programs & Features/View Installed Updates (top left).Personally, I would not do this and would go with the plan you have in mind based on previous posts

Not a good start. I uninstalled the brother printer and driver was also gone. Restarted the PC. Plugged in the printer USB cable and the PC said it was drive F: without media and no driver was selectable. Will now try installing all the brother media from the disc provided with the printer.0

I have a message in Windows Updates that the 10 May 2020 update is on its way.
Is is absolutely essential to install it - especially in view of the problems it is causing with printers?Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:1 -
Complete failure on that one. On putting in the CD it said there is no printer driver that is compatible with your OS and crashed out.
I then downloaded the installation package (most up to date) from the Brother web site and ran it and it appeared to complete but on plugging in the printer it installed as drive F: with no media and on trying to print it said cannot print to the USB printer.
Next step to see if I can learn how to remove windows patches.0
