You probably have too many signs. Get the 'ring' doorbell with one sign only - 'We only answer the door if you ring the bell, and if you're selling anything we won't be interested, no matter how great your deal is' - then they can knock as much as they like.
We began with just a single sign in the window - it didn't work

We then placed an additional sign above the door knocker, it didn't work.

We then placed yet another sign nearer to eye level on the street door - that didn't work.

We then got CCTV and a related sign (near the camera not on the door) - that didn't work.

We then put another sign at eye level on the street door - unfortunately this had the same effect as the other two i.e. None.

The ring video doorbell is an interesting idea.

The origin of the problem may lie in part as (a) not everyone can read (b) not everone who can read can read English.

Hence suggestions, in a similar vein to leaving radios on and planting rose hedges as a deterrent  for burglars, are welcomed.

You could put one of these signs up?

That's not a bad idea ! Unfortunately it would probably prevent the post and our groceries from being delivered.

Or just have the Ring doorbell.
No signs. WHy bother, they get ignored.
Anyone selling just cut them off. Don't answer the door.
No need to be polite about it IMHO.

I will investigate the ring doorbell - but is communication possible if they don't actually press the button ?

Haven't got a clue, I've really got no use for one here.
I'm sure all the details are on their website though.
FWIW, I've got a Reolink wireless camera that has a PIR alarm, and allows you to talk through it. (Although I've never used that either. We get virtually no unwanted visitors here. Luckily!)

Unfortunately it doesn't appear to say on their website hence the question. I will e-mail and ask directly.

A door that opens outwards - Deters cold callers from re-offending once they have had a bloodied nose. Doesn't stop the next oik banging on the door.

Electrified door bells & knockers, gin traps, bear pits, notices - Nothing seems to deter the determined cold caller.

I did wonder if it was worth building a small gibbet in the front garden and suspending some skeletal remains.

A few years ago our council set up a "No Cold Calling Zone" in the village.  Can't remember the last time we had anyone touting their wares.
Google "No Cold Calling Zones" for infornation.

Fitting an all metal front door, wire to the mains with a control switch next to the chair might work.  Only survivors would be able to complain.

Now... Would that be the switch next to the electric chair ??
