A new MOT on one of my vans is due on the 9th July, I have now been told twice by quick fit that the rules changed in May and that I must go ahead as normal with MOT. Van is good as off the road right now, who do you believe ?
Nothing changed in May, the 6 month extension still applies. The MOT on one of our cars was due on 3rd July and last week it automatically updated to expire on 3rd January 2021.0 -
Yes I also understand the 6 months extension will only be applied 7 days before expiry. I don't know if legislation is required to reduce the extension or scrap it without notice. Hopefully they will at let give a couple of months grace to those people whose car MOT expires in July and August.. I believe they have reduced some commercial vehicles MOT's to 3 months extension.0

The government website is clear that the 6 month extension applies to cars, vans & motor bikes.

Hi everyone, I had no idea about the 7 day rule, my mot expires on the 8th July so according to the replies there's not much chance the government will stop the deferment before the 1st July, and on that day I'll get my extension?
I know that some businesses are being opened up on the 4th July, I was getting worried that something about the mot deferment being stopped was going to be announced on that day,
But this 7 day rule means my mot will already have been extended?0 -
Look up your registration and see. Your vehicle still needs to be roadworthy if it's pulled and if it's not well.. garages are still doing mots and other work.0

If you read the article in What Car (i cannot post the link), is does appear the government are reconsidering continuing the extension of MOT testing. If is reduced to 3 months that does makes sense, but if they stop it completely it will makes things very difficult for anyone due for an MOT test in the next month or so, especially people with an Mot due in mid July as this would give them very little time to sort it out, Surely common sense will prevail. .

I also have read the article in What Fire about changing the 6 month MOT extension. If this happens it is a real concern to me as I am 72 years old and feel extremely uncomfortable at the moment taking my car to be tested. My renewal is due on 2nd August. I would be quite happy with a compromise of 3 month extension, by which time the Coronaavirus situation will be clearer either for better or worse. I always like to watch when My MOT is being done, which is a legal requirement to be able to do so if you wish as long as you do not say anything. I thought the extension was introduced to protect everyone and especially the more vulnerable age group. I average about 6000 mile a year but probable since the lockdown have only driven about 500 miles in all. I consider it would be very insensitive if the government suddenly withdrew the extension, but that it why a compromise is needed to balance the wealth against health issue,0

When the extension was given, the government had to give a few days notice as it had to be a change in legislation; I would expect the same to be in reverse. so at worst there would be notice.
Also there has to be sufficient MoT testing stations and repair places open and functioning at reasonable capacity to allow key workers to be able to get their MoTs done without major hassle. I would expect a few weeks notice minimum.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
