Hi, I am due to fly to Cape Verde on the 5th September 2020 for 1 week. My passport expires 15th March 2021 will I have to renew or will I be OK as it is just within the 6 months required?

What are the entry requirements for the country you are visiting? If they say 6 months then that is fine.1

Historically, British passports had up to 9 months (I think) added to a new passport if it was renewed early. That may not be acceptable in some countries so check the start date and work on how long from that date would be remaining.

Hi, thanks for your response. my issue date is 15th March 2011. Is there a different start date somewhere on the passport?TELLIT01 said:Historically, British passports had up to 9 months (I think) added to a new passport if it was renewed early. No - it would seem that your passport is dated 15th March 2011 and will expire on 14th March 2021.cmurray said:

Mine is dated March 2011 too but the expiry date is November 2021 - this is because I had some months left on my previous passport which they ''added on'' to my present passport.
The problem I will have (unless there is an agreement with Brexit) that my passport technically becomes 10 years old next March so won't be accepted in most European countries.
I will have to apply for a new one BUT I will lose out on the months remaining as the rules have now changed.1 -
jonesMUFCforever, thanks for explaining the situation much more clearly than I did.

There is an agreement that passports valid within the EU upto their expiry date, and this rule carries through to 31/12/20.jonesMUFCforever said:

Silvercar thanks for your response. So if I'm flying 5th September and passport is valid until 15th march 2021 I should be OK to travel as I'm only just within the 6 month requirement for Cape verde?
Don't want to get to airport then be denied 😂0 -
This funny "expires before the expiry date" is only for the EU and only after 31/12/20.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. As it stands then if I try to use my current passport on or after 1st April 2021 I will be denied boarding because the passport will be 10 years and 1 day. (For EU countries).silvercar said:

My quandary is that if possible I would like to visit the USA sometime next year - so my passport will be fine to go there but an ESTA would last 2 years so would have to re apply for this and pay again when my passport expires in Nov 2021.
I might renew early next year and have done with it.1
