Hi folks,
Currently running WIndows 10 version 1909, its running fine, I have tried the latest version of ten 2004 and cant get it to upgrade from 1909 to 2004, I have tried four times in all troubleshooting as I went but it seems with the current OS setup it gives a BSOD at around. 75% working on updates.
I do have a really stripped down Acronis image of windows 10 that will upgrade to 2004 on this computer, but that is no use to me, as I have spent months and months with the usual OS installing programs etc, so don't want to do the same again, takes ages and time to get OS the way I want it.
So my questions are,
1 What happens when support for 1909 version runs out, isn't it may 21, will I then be forced to upgrade, and if I don't will I stop receiving security updates form Microsoft ?
2 Here is the error message I get once 2004 fails and windows undoes the changes, anything seem familiar that might be the cause?
Thanks for any info.

There is a long thread at answers.microsoft.com (you can put the error code into Google). It suggests a number of possible workrounds. Some or all of these are under your second error screen. Eventually support will end for your current version but if, for example, you miss this version and update to the second one in 2020 you will be fine.1

That error is usually related to incompatible drivers, do you have a folder called
$Windows.~BT
under your install drive? (usually C:\) (It might be hidden)
Try typing C:\$Windows.~BT directly into a file window.
If you find this go to "Sources\Panther" and look for a file that start "CompatData_2020" with a date and time format afterwards, there might be multiple ones there, look for the latest one and Right clcik and "open with..." and select "notepad". Copy and paste the results here, or if its too large, use something like https://justpaste.it/

Each feature update is serviced for eighteen months.1

Might not be your case but worth a quick check. Win 10 updates require a lot of disc space. I forget what currently is required but if less than 10 or 15GB spare on your c drive that might be the problem....

Thanks for all replies, I have 100gb of free disk space, the current install 1909 is around 152gb used space (Loads of programs including making software) so I would imagine 100gb free should be ok to upgrade to 2004.
Though the changes were undone and I was reverted back to 1909 I did loose a little drive space, so just put my Acronis image of 1909 back again. As well as that I used the media creation tool to make a DVD rather than windows update, though I am prompted there to download 2004.
So though I have got that BT folder it is not much good to me as it was before the failed upgrade, unless I try again but since Its several failed attempts now, and I think I would prefer to wait a while, do you think Microsoft will update the ISO in a few months time so I will be able to burn an updated install DVD.
Thanks very much for the suggestion just wondering how good is that BT log file at getting to the root of the install problem?
Many thanks to all.

The BT folder and the .xml I pointed you to will 99.9% contain the answers you need. I manage the deployment and upgrade process in a corporate environment managing about 4,000 machines, the BT folder and XML log hasn't led me wrong so far.

Have you tried changing this setting by any chance?
The author of the article, BrianClark, has a YouTube channel named Britec09. He is a wealth of information and has a number of uploaded videos on the subject of tweaks to Windows 10 and dealing with updates. I am sure one of the more recent ones deals with the 2004 update and covers your particular problem. They are all about 12 minutes long but I’m afraid I cannot be more precise about which particular one.1 -
Have you run the troubleshooter? The Windows 10 Update Assistant sometimes helps https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3159635/windows-10-update-assistant
I know Domestos kills 99% of germs, but I'm worried about the 1% that got away.1 -
Thanks a lot to everybody who contributed the excellent advice, once I attempt the install again with almost subsequent failure I will post the logs of the files.
Many thanks to all.0
