..probably make more sense to reduce it to 60 IMHO....
..and all cars should be fitted with speed limiters at (say) 70mph
    ....popcorn ready.....

Too many drivers with defective "balls to brains" ratio!  Some of the country roads near my home are frightening to drive on. Set off earlier if you need to get someplace in good time as a sense of urgency fueled with impatience often affects other users and just serves to spread bad will.   Less haste more speed   ;)

I do 70mph on motorways and get passed by some cars like i am pootling along. If it goes to 80mph the idiots will be out thinking they can now go faster still.

Stop HGVs overtaking. That's what they do in Germany.
I've watched HGVs overtake in Germany. They call it "elephant racing".

The limit will never be increased - fuel consumption would go up drastically (thus hurting our green targets), safety advocates would go crazy and almost no time would be saved. If anything it'd increase congestion elsewhere as you'd be allowing more cars to exit motorways in the same time.

On motorways increase the speed limit to 80mph and install average speed check cameras at every exit and entrance. That way everyone will stick to it and accidents will go down
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

And who is going to pay for all that infrastructure?

Everyone - except for those who understand how averages work. They can do 100 mph for half of their journey, and 60 mph for the rest.
NB Half the journey by time, not distance

Speeding fines. And (if you believe the likes of BRAKE) savings in the NHS.

Pointless. People who currently drive at 80 will just continue at 80, others will continue at 70 as they do now.
Are many motorway accidents caused by speed?
