Buying new car --- what is "delivery"?

Hi all -- I am buying a new car (yes I know it's cheaper to buy secondhand) and the car is considerably more than list price as a result of various 'extras'. One item I have a hard time being reconciled with is something called 'delivery' at £595. Is this item normal for new cars? It's particularly galling as this particular car was already in stock in their showroom and they are a Renault/Dacia dealier..... It seems an awful lot for what is a budget car and is surely just a way of bumping the price up?

Well it had to get delivered there somehow didn't it? Regardless of whether it has been sat there for 1 day or 60 days.

Is that cost included in the overall price and just seen because it's been broken down on the invoice?
New cars are generally priced OTR (on the road) but on the invoice the total price is broken down, so the delivery is in the OTR price.
Either that or you've bought a car in stock at another dealers and they're charging you to have it shipped to theirs.1 -
Isn't there one of the German manufacturers who say you can pick your car up from the factory. All you pay is the normal delivery charge. That is you can pick it up yourself but you can't avoid the delivery charge.1

Waitrose never charge me delivery on top of the price of my groceries. But all that food had to get there. Same goes for Argos. And WH Smith. And TK Maxx. And my local pub.Penguin_ said:Well it had to get delivered there somehow didn't it? Regardless of whether it has been sat there for 1 day or 60 days.
The OP has a point.2 -

The OP has a point. If you asked for a breakdown of the costs you would see it.I guess for the OP, the question is whether it is an extra item or is an itemised component of the price.I have to say that years ago I went to buy a computer from a shop and they added on something like £50 delivery and I said I wanted to collect it, but they said it was the delivery cost to the shop; I didn't buy.

Car is a Dacia Sandero Stepway which are made in Romania --as the last car I bought new was over 20 years ago I'm disappointed to find that the buying process is still so opaque, my 'vehicle order form' not really saying much about the vehicle or items I've bought like 'delivery' on the bill (six hundred quid!) exactly what accessories which are included in the 'dealer pack' and so on, and still, in the nicest possible way, subject to a very hard sell.... Not sure if this is just the way Renault / Dacia operate or it's widespread in the industry. Doesn't even state it's a new car!prowla said:Supersonos said:

Otherwise I'd say it's just a way of hiding the true cost for advertising purposes -- but what do I know?

Just comparing Renault/Dacia's list price in brochures etc. with the actual price at the dealer.... Are they really saying it costs 600 pounds to move a car in bulk from Romania to their UK dealers? Don't think so...

I suppose my confusion arises because the salesperson was pushing the basic price as being a good thing and their discount so it surprised me when the OTR price was so much more. It was a car in their showroom and he worked out the price on the spot after consultation with the manager and sizing me up. It's a trim Dacia no longer sell ('Techroad') so I have a hard job comparing like with like. I've bought lots of things in my life just not cars.... what a headache...Goudy said:Is that cost included in the overall price and just seen because it's been broken down on the invoice?

Thanks for pointing that out. Signed first and then checked! Not easy to do in the dealership with unfamiliar procedure and COVID-19 protection.... Does that mean that every dealer's basic price is the same?AdrianC said:https://cdn.group.renault.com/dac/gb/dacia-new-cars/editorial/brochures/dacia-price-guide-june.pdf
