Rosa_Damascena said: With the surge in homeworking, there was a massive demand on sheds / outbuildings and pandemic conditions meant that the supply couldn't match demand, leading to huge delays.
It has also pushed up the price - I contemplated buying a second shed to store more logs in. Same size, from the same supplier, and the price has more than doubled in just two years.

Her courage will change the world.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.
  • I built mine 2/4m x 2.4m for less than 5k.  Floor and walls are sip panels (OBD & 80mm thick insulation).  The roof is a Kingspan insulated metal roof.  There is a Patio door on the front..

Lined the walls wiht MDF including one wiht a cavitiy behind to run electrics to sockets and lights etc.

The Floors/walls were supplied from a company on ebay.  I sent a scan of a sketch of the dimensions I wanted, they sent back some drawings and a price.

Panels arrived on a trialer.  All panels numbered.  Very easy to assemble.

Even now, builiding a fully insulated electric supplied building is very possible for MUCH less than Garden Buuldings are currently selling at.

Of course, it means building it yourself, which took time.  The first building we had was from Sanctum Garden Buildings.  They were done and susted in 4 hours!
  • I searched online for a log cabin to act as a home/office, prices where extortionate.
We decided to leave buying one until the winter and shopped around, managed to buy exactly what we wanted with a saving of about 30% on the summer prices.Very pleased with our purchase, added a desk and chair from Argos.
We also bought a small 2 seater sofa from ikea for under£100. Cushions where from www.cushiondept.com
  • DIY is possible! if you can get the parts together then building a space like you're mentioning definitely wouldn't be impossible. You might also be able to start working on it after only a few days, whereas the lead times you're getting for pre-fabricated ones are starting to become months long!

Edit: I misread this as "working IN it" (in the sense of doing the office work)

That reminds me of March 2020, when the first lockdown came. We just had a (big) tool shed. I moved bikes, lawnmower etc to one side, got an old desk from the attic, camping chair, extension lead through the garden, fan heater, and worked there.

Then we modified the old shed bit by bit to become our pretty fancy garden house now, working in it the whole time since then

We're hopefully going to be building one ourselves (DIY) this year. Fortunately we already have external electrics plus some of the materials (ours will be built in blockwork with timber cladding) including reclaimed gothic style door and windows that cost us nothing 😀😉😎

The roof will be rubber with a lantern for additional natural light.

It will be a decent size (18 x 12') and will double as an office/library and summer living room till we build a two storey extension next year.....

    Can't wait to get started!

Much like the 'save £x in y year' or debt free wannabes, it sounds like we need a 'build a shed in 2022' thread.

It's a decent way down my to do list, but I'd like to get it done this year, having not gotten it done last year.

I think I could build a 8' x 6' garden office for well under £3k of materials, to a spec that just isn't commercially available. Getting the rest of the house and garden done, and then finding a week to do it is the issue!

That's a project and a half!  Guess if you're building proper walls out of block that means 1000mm footings, dpc etc etc.
