Yeah, I find tinned potatoes are OK in a stew or something where they are in with other ingredients but I really don't care for the taste of them on their own I'm afraid. Great if you do like them straight from the tin though.

I have noticed this - The worst tatties by far I've had this year were locally produced - very small, many damaged and went-off/sprouted in no time.

Not far behind them were tatties from Lidl, which was about the only store in my area that had them for several weeks after Lockdown - even "premium" spuds like Jersey Royals were in miserable condition, with many green or quickly turning to mush.
    M&S too - "Season's Gold" err, no!
The best/most consistent I've had were Sainsbury's Charlotte and Vivaldi, which have been good and kept a good 2-3 weeks out of plastic, hung in a cloth bag in my garage, alongside the bag with the onions, which have been consistently good.

I have to admit to being a fan of instant mash - ever since it first came out - Yeoman, which had a strange flavour that I loved!
Cheap supermarket ones are fine.  (And they make very good potato scones.)

:) All the spuds for sale for the past 6-9 months have been out of the ground and in cold storage. Spuds lose flavour and nutrition over the months of storage, it's just a feature of the tuber, nothing can be done about it. Spuds are put through graders, with the ones deemed too large and too small literally not making the grade. Ditto ones clipped by the harvester or chewed on by slugs. Even home gardeners like me have a certain number of pranged spuds, tiddlers and slug/ wire worm damage. My 2019 spud crop has long since been eaten. Spuds are shooting because they're reacting to the season and trying to  grow. I suspect the better graded spuds were sold and eaten 6+ months ago.

We're in the Hungry Gap in these latitudes with the previous year's crop gone or depleted in quality. The 2020 spud crop is busily growing away, and some should be ready in about 4-6 weeks, with the bulk being harvested early autumn. Meantime, there's imports from warmer climes, or processed options, I'm afraid.
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I actually got some nice bakers from marks and Spencers on Tuesday. Had to pop in there for some bits for mum ( its not my choice of shop ) saw the bakers and thought they looked good so got a pack. Cant remember the variety but they were Israeli and very tasty. Not huge, Mr S needed two but no black bits or eyes

    This is interesting.
I get a weekly organic veg box, and usually only occasional order potatoes. However, at the start of lockdown, the company obviously had mega problems and had to ration everyone to a fixed contents veg box for the first few weeks with potatoes and carrots in every box.

So, suddenly I found myself with potatoes to have to use every week. I must say, I think there was only one week when some of the potatoes in that box looked a bit iffy, but they've been ok otherwise. The iffy ones......they were ok with the iffy bits cut out; I think I only threw one away whole.

More recently I've been getting Jersey Royals and they have been delicious.

Maybe it's to do with organic methods of farming/harvesting? Don't know.

  • Potatoes go off or wrinkly or sprout ever so quickly these days, they go green pretty fast too so I try to cook them as they come in the delivery and keep them in the fridge to reheat or use in potato salad.  Baking potatoes reheat well in the microwave or in the oven, bigger ones get chopped or sliced and top pies or casseroles even baby ones roast nicely after they've been cooked and sliced cooked potatoes fry nicely too.  It saves the waste and they keep for a week or so in the fridge once they're cooked and cooled.
  • They are only spuds, chop 'em up and mash the forkers!
